Good evening, Doctor. I purchased the Bare Minerals PhytoRetinol you introduced in last week's livestream and I'm already noticing results. I'm so relieved it doesn't cause irritation even though it's not a quasi-drug. Thank you so much. If there are any moisturizing toners recommended for people in their 40s that aren't quasi-drugs but are still effective — similar to PhytoRetinol — could you please share them?
I believe Bare Minerals also offers a toner in their PhytoRetinol line, but when it comes to moisturizing options outside of quasi-drugs, there's one I'm quite fond of: the Sofina Beauté High Moisture Toner (Brightening). It's incredibly hydrating and labeled for skin in your 30s and 40s. It contains an ingredient called Kerastine, a moisture-retaining component derived from a flower that maintains hydration even in desert conditions. It also contains Tuberose Polysaccharides, which gives it an exceptional moisturizing effect. And Sofina Beauté isn't particularly expensive — it even comes in a refill size. While I wouldn't call it ultra-budget, it's quite affordable. Among moisturizing toners you can find at drugstores, Sofina Beauté (by Kao) is genuinely excellent. I highly recommend the Sofina Beauté High Moisture Toner — Extra Moist version.
Good evening! A mother of six at age 30 — isn't that amazing? I have so much respect for you! Managing three kids every day is already overwhelming, so six is truly incredible. You mentioned you go bare-faced or with just sunscreen every day, and you'd like to know what cleanser and face wash to use — and whether you need both.
If you're not wearing makeup, you really don't need a cleansing oil or balm — a face wash alone is sufficient. However, if the sunscreen you're using specifically says to use a cleansing product, then cleansing alone may be enough in that case.
Good evening, Doctor. I've heard that high-dose vitamin C IV drips are great for skin, and I'm considering trying one. From your perspective, what are the differences in effects between IV vitamin C, topical vitamin C, and oral vitamin C?
All three share the same benefit: antioxidant properties. When I know I'll be exposed to a lot of UV rays, for example, I sometimes get a high-dose vitamin C IV myself. That said, if you're consistently taking oral vitamin C, that's likely sufficient. IV drips are best reserved for special occasions when you want an extra boost.
As for topical vitamin C, it works directly on the skin. IV drips, on the other hand, don't deliver vitamin C straight to the skin — your body uses vitamin C in many places: blood vessels, bone formation, and countless other functions. The body prioritizes these internal needs first, so the skin receives whatever remains last. That's why applying it directly to the skin is more efficient for cosmetic purposes. The type of benefit is the same, but if your goal is skin improvement, combining internal and external intake is ideal.
My concern is pigmentation-related dark circles. I've heard that PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy can help with dark circles — what are your thoughts on its effectiveness and safety?
I've personally had a vampire facial (PRP treatment). For dark circles, it's a bit complicated — I personally tend to get fine lines in that area, and after the treatment, they seemed less fixed and prominent. However, since I don't have pigmentation-type dark circles myself, I can't speak from personal experience on that. For pigmentation-type dark circles, if PRP is injected or used with a derma pen, there's a chance it could actually cause some pigmentation, so I'd say the results are about 50/50. One session won't deliver dramatic before-and-after results — multiple sessions are likely necessary.
Good evening. I'm interested in placenta extract drinks. Can you actually absorb the benefits through a beverage rather than an injection? I've also heard that placenta injections prevent you from donating blood — does that apply to drinks as well? And thank you for the compliment — you look lovely today too!
Let me address these one by one. First, regarding the cosmetic benefits of placenta: topical placenta is known for its skin-brightening effects. When it comes to drinking it, the only clearly established benefit is improved circulation. Beyond that, effects tend to vary from person to person. That said, placenta contains a rich array of amino acids and other nutrients, and many people who drink it report reduced fatigue. Personally, I don't drink placenta extract much — I feel it's something I can hold off on for now.
Regarding the blood donation restriction: injectable placenta is derived from human placentas and is processed to eliminate all currently known infectious agents. The key word is "currently known" — there remains a small possibility of unknown risks, which is why those who receive placenta injections cannot donate blood. Placenta drinks, however, are derived from animal sources like pigs, so they have no relation to blood donation restrictions. To clarify: clinical placenta injections do disqualify you from donating blood, but placenta drinks do not.
Good evening. I'd like to remove a mole on my face. What downsides do you see, Doctor? It's about 3mm and slightly raised.
The main risk is that if the removal goes too deep, it can leave a depression or indentation in the skin. For this reason, I recommend not trying to remove it all at once — it's better to do it gradually over multiple sessions.
Good evening. I'd like to get rid of back acne. I've been washing with soap and a body brush, then applying an over-the-counter acne treatment. I've been doing this every day in the bath and it has improved compared to before, but it's still not fully clearing up. Do you have any recommendations?
First and foremost: please see a doctor. Back acne is notoriously stubborn, and if left untreated, it can leave permanent scarring. Please make an appointment with a dermatologist. If seeing a doctor truly isn't an option, start by stopping the body brush. After washing with your acne soap, apply moisturizer — and then apply the acne treatment on top. For specific product recommendations, I believe I have a video dedicated to back acne, so please refer to that.
I had a skin imaging analysis at a cosmetic dermatology clinic today, and it showed noticeable pigmentation on my eyelids. I've been careful to remove eye makeup with a dedicated remover without rubbing, but I wear contact lenses daily and apply Elixir Wrinkle Cream every night. What can I do for eyelid pigmentation beyond avoiding friction?
Eyelid skin is naturally very thin, so pigmentation there is quite common even without makeup use. The first thing to consider is how your pigmentation compares to the general population — most people have some degree of eyelid discoloration. It would help to know exactly what the doctor said about your specific case.
If you want to address it, an eye cream with brightening claims would be a great addition — apply it consistently to the eyelid area. Brightening toners and serums designed for the full face are also widely available and can help. Vitamin C products in particular are beneficial.
Regarding your Elixir Wrinkle Cream — it contains retinol, which is excellent. However, Elixir's brightening serum contains retinol along with 4MSK and tranexamic acid, making it more comprehensive for pigmentation concerns. I'd suggest switching to that product.
Regarding lower eyelid fat removal (blepharoplasty / fat repositioning): it's actually a fairly straightforward procedure. Those of us in the field are so accustomed to it that it doesn't seem intimidating at all. It's not really a "scalpel surgery" — it's more of a tiny incision, and the fat just gently comes out. It really is a very minor procedure. Omotesando Skin Clinic has an Osaka location with a doctor who specializes in this procedure, so if you're in Osaka, please search for "Omotesando Skin Clinic Osaka."
Are there any cosmetics or aesthetic treatments effective for post-acne pigmentation?
This type of pigmentation is best addressed with vitamin C. For serums, I personally use Spa Treatment's Real C Serum, which contains pure vitamin C and helps regulate sebum production — great for acne-prone skin. I also recommend Ci:z.Labo's V Essence Lotion EX 20%, which contains APPS (a stable vitamin C derivative) and supports collagen and elastin production. I use both of these toners. Vitamin C products are definitely the way to go. For treatments, the approach is similar to treating dark spots — light-based therapies such as Photon Silk or VBL are effective options.
Good evening, I love you, Doctor! I'm a nurse and a mother — keep up the great work! My high school freshman daughter has had dark, discolored elbows for years and wants to get rid of them. Could you recommend any ointments or other methods?
For elbows, the key first step is exfoliation — I'd recommend using a scrub to remove the buildup of dead skin cells. After exfoliating, apply an affordable brightening product regularly. Something like hatomugi (barley water) toner or a light brightening/anti-inflammatory toner that can be applied generously to the body would work well. Rather than ointments, consistent application of vitamin C-based or brightening skincare products is more effective for pigmentation. Results take time, but persistence is key.
Thank you so much for watching!
