Arata Tomori, good evening. I have a question about skincare. I have dehydrated skin, and I'm prone to blackheads and pimples around my nose and cheeks. Are there any recommended toners or skincare methods?
Since you have dehydrated skin, you're probably producing quite a bit of oil. What you need to do is properly hydrate the stratum corneum. I think it's good to support your skin's ability to create moisture on its own. So I'd recommend something like Ice Power Number 11 or the OneByKo toner "The Water Mate." The Water Mate is a complex of hyaluronic acid and ceramide. You might think it's nothing special, but these two have very different molecular weights, and normally they wouldn't combine at all. However, using proprietary technology—scientifically speaking, one has a slight positive charge and one a slight negative charge—we use a magnet-like effect to attract them and reduce the molecular weight so it penetrates the skin. The Water Mate uses this world-first technology. I think it's great to apply a good amount of it.
On October 15, OneByKo is releasing a sister version of the Water Mate. The original Water Mate contains almost no oils. So for people with dehydrated skin who produce a bit of sebum but are dry inside, the Water Mate is excellent. However, around your 40s, you might want to add a bit more oil. OneByKo has another product in a reddish package. It contains a small amount of oil while maintaining the features of the Water Mate itself, which includes ingredients that improve aquaporin circulation. Plus, it contains niacinamide, and this launches on October 15.
So if you have dehydrated skin, use the existing Water Mate. Or if you feel you also need more hydration and oils, you could use the higher-tier version.
Friend Tomori, hello for the first time. I'm sensitive-skinned, so I use Orbis "Sun Screen" for sunscreen. I generally don't experience redness or itching with it, but only my neck itches. I suspect it's because I sweat a lot on my neck. Do you have any solutions? Please tell me if you do.
Yes, if your face is fine with it, then the neck likely sweats more, and there might be inflammation at the base of your neck skin. Since it's difficult to prevent sweating, I think it's best to manage it so inflammation doesn't occur by maintaining your skin's barrier function. I'd suggest treating your neck with the same skincare routine as your face, applying products after things have settled down a bit.
I'm 37 and asking my first question. My cheek pores are individually reddened. I've been getting pore laser treatment at a dermatology clinic, but it hasn't improved. A doctor told me these pores will eventually turn black and merge with adjacent pores—is that true? I thought it would take about 10 days, so I'm also lightly controlling my sugar intake. I want to have beautiful skin. Are there any recommended cosmetics or beauty treatments?
Do you have any itching? The redness is concerning to me. It's possible your skin condition hasn't changed, but one possibility is that excess sebum causes inflammation. So first, you need to properly manage sebum control. Cleanse thoroughly, and after removing sebum, you must add sufficient moisture. Moisturize properly. Add vitamin C, and if there's inflammation, use ingredients that calm inflammation and reduce redness and pigmentation.
For hydration care, what skincare would you recommend for fall? This season, I'm pushing Obagi cream. Obagi X Derma Advanced Lift. This cream was developed based on the discovery that lifting while applying tension—not friction, but gentle uplifting of the skin—causes a lifting effect. The key is to apply it with this lifting motion.
Have you ever done Zo Skin Health "Therapeutic"? I'm confused whether to choose between Zo Skin and laser. Which is better?
I've done the Therapeutic once. But honestly, I don't think I could do it a second time. That's because if you're going to do Therapeutic, you really need to commit about 3 months, with your face turning very red, and deal with significant downtime. But when you do it, you get beautiful results. The skin becomes really beautiful, and your skin tone improves significantly. However, since I'm in public often and can't manage that much downtime, for my lifestyle, I'd choose laser. But if you want intensive, dramatic improvement and more radiance, the Therapeutic is good.
I've been doing photofacial regularly in my late 20s. Currently, I have no visible age spots or melasma, but I've heard that light therapy can sometimes worsen unseen melasma. Should I continue as I age, or should I stop or switch to different treatments?
Arata Tomori continues light therapy regularly. Well, I've done light therapy, but I stopped once. That was during pregnancy when my melasma worsened a bit, so I took a break and started again later. However, at Motesand Skin Clinic, there's an opportunity to check whether you have hidden melasma on your face. Based on that check, my melasma didn't seem to be worsening, so I started. I think you should ideally have that kind of check before doing it.
Photofacial and similar light treatments can worsen melasma, so if you're concerned, I'd recommend either taking tranexamic acid and synapse together while doing light therapy, or switching to something like laser toning with a Yag laser.
The basic skincare products you recommend are specialty items that are somewhat expensive—around 5000 yen. Is there a good emulsion that provides thorough hydration?
In that case, for an anti-aging emulsion, I'd absolutely recommend Elixir's "Tsuya-Dama," Elixir Bouncing Moisture Emulsion. If it's just for hydration without anti-aging, I think Carte HD's emulsion is also good. There's also The Retinol Time in white, which is a brightening line, and that emulsion might work well too.
Have you ever used products from the brand "Naka Maker"?
I'm actually interested right now and was thinking about diving deeper, so I purchased it. Actually, Naka Maker approached me about working together once, and at that time, they explained the product overview in detail, and I thought they were a really trustworthy brand. That project is over now, but I've purchased their toner myself and am exploring their products more deeply. They make cosmetics with great sincerity, and many people emphasize ingredients. But they also carefully select raw materials and clearly state percentages and formulations, so I think they're excellent. I particularly like this "Original Brightening Toner" which contains tranexamic acid, vitamin C derivative, and ceramide. It's really good. Niacinamide is also in it, so with amino acids and such, the cost performance is excellent.
Professor, good evening. For the coming season, what would you recommend applying last in my morning skincare routine—an emulsion or cream?
Albion's "Fleuresh" series "Full Refine Milk" and L'Occitane's "Immortelle" "Marjohn." It says "skin-tightening beauty essence," and it contains retinol-class ingredient Immortelle, plus many ingredients that help promote collagen. Albion also contains "bamboo shoot skin extract," which promotes collagen metabolism. Collagen is constantly being broken down and rebuilt, so these ingredients support that process.
If you're particularly concerned about pores, I'd recommend L'Occitane. If you want hydration and plumped skin, I'd recommend Albion's Fleuresh. By the way, Albion's Fleuresh is a renewal of the old "Exage." When Exage was discontinued, everyone thought it was the end. I even thought Albion had made a mistake. But when Fleuresh launched, I looked at the ingredients and researched it thoroughly, and it's actually an upgrade from Exage—much better. So if you disliked Exage, I think Fleuresh is excellent.
