Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today I would like to introduce skincare that should be done by age group. Of course, the way skincare works changes depending on lifestyle and skin type, but it's also very important to choose which skincare items to focus on depending on your age. So today, I'll introduce some good skincare recommendations while giving examples, and discuss how to care for your skin by age group. Please watch until the end.
I considered starting from the teenage years, but I think most teenagers have skincare products bought for them rather than buying them themselves. So simply wash your face and moisturize. In teenagers, puberty is starting earlier these days, so it begins around ages 12-13 for early bloomers and continues until around ages 17-18 for late bloomers. This causes acne and changes in skin type. If you have oily skin, just wash and use toner. If you think you have dry skin, use lotion instead of toner. In any case, use moisturizer that suits you. If you have acne, please understand that acne is a disease called acne vulgaris, so don't try to treat it with skincare alone—go to a dermatologist.
I think people start wondering what to do about skincare around their 20s, so let me talk about that. Here's what you should do: focus on just two things.
First, apply sunscreen every day. For your 20s, this is really all you need to do. Why? Because 70% of skin aging is photo-aging, that is, UV damage. So even if you use expensive department store cosmetics in your 20s or spend a lot of money on skincare, if you're not careful about sun exposure, it's completely pointless. Recently, we've learned that among UV rays, Long UVA not only causes age spots and wrinkles but also sagging skin. About 70% of UV rays that reach our skin appear to be Long UVA. It also causes dullness and yellowing. So it's important to not just block UV rays but to block Long UVA starting around your 20s. You might think sunscreen isn't skincare, but it is. I think it's the ultimate skincare.
The most accessible option is this one. I've been using it for a long time: La Roche-Posay UV Idea Protection Tone Up. It was reformulated this season. La Roche-Posay, part of the L'Oréal Group, has been researching Long UVA for a long time, so they have a UVA mark indicating they block Long UVA. While choosing based on feel, SPF, and other factors is certainly important, using a sunscreen that focuses on Long UVA from your 20s is really the ultimate anti-aging care.
Second, use moisturizing that suits you. When Japanese people talk about moisturizing that suits them, because we're so diligent, we tend to apply toner, then lotion, then cream, and squeeze in essence in between. But honestly, I don't think people in their 20s need to do all of this. Some people need everything, while others have issues with acne or enlarged pores. First, consider whether you tend to get acne or dryness. If you neither dry out nor get acne, you have normal skin. So simply apply a toner. For normal skin, something straightforward like regular hyaluronic acid toner from Hada Labo is good. Also, something like Sofina IP's Keratin Layer Treatment Basic Lotion. For normal skin people, first try a simple moisturizing product. If it feels a bit insufficient, add a lotion. If you feel well-moisturized with just that, that's fine with me. But if that doesn't work, try adding a lotion. If you're still dry after that, apply a cream. Don't apply everything thoughtlessly. Start with a simple toner for normal skin, and you'll understand what kind of oil your skin needs next. In that sense, your 20s are about finding the right balance of moisture and oil for your skin.
Of course, it's fine to introduce components like vitamin C or retinol during this period, but if your base isn't set up properly and you don't understand your own moisturizing needs, then adding various ingredients will make you think things like "vitamin C doesn't work for me." So it's important to first find moisturizing that works for you. You can keep it simple. If you really want to add a beneficial skincare ingredient, long-lasting ingredients like vitamin C or niacinamide are good. Adding these from your 20s is beneficial because vitamin C has antioxidant properties, helping with pores, brightening, and anti-aging. Niacinamide can be a quasi-drug but also brightens, prevents skin irritation, improves fine lines, and gives skin firmness and glow.
Around your 30s, transparency starts to decline. I think most young Japanese people don't have prominent age spots. So what should you focus on between your 20s and 30s? The main reason transparency declines is that chronic inflammation starts around your 30s. With inflammation as the base, you get dullness, reduced transparency, and loss of glow. So first, introduce something that stops chronic inflammation. What I want you to use is, quite simply, fermented cosmetics. There are many anti-inflammatory ingredients like glycyrrhizin and allantoin, and it's fine to use them individually. But fermented cosmetics regulate barrier function while reducing inflammation and contain many mixed ingredients. A representative example is SK-II. SK-II's Pitera is a pioneering fermented cosmetic that brightens, reduces inflammation while improving transparency, and provides moisture. Also, Estée's Aqua Charge released last year contains Rice Power Extract No. 11 Alpha, which works on the stratum corneum and increases skin moisture. Increasing skin moisture improves barrier function and reduces inflammation. There's also Farscht Black Rice Ferment, which reduces inflammation. Using fermented cosmetics is good from your late 20s to your 30s.
From here, we want to add firmness and glow. I recommend introducing retinol around this time. Pure retinol is better for the late 30s, but from your late 20s to 30s, start with retinyl palmitate as a long-term investment. This increases firmness, making pores less noticeable. While wrinkles haven't formed yet, you can prevent them by adding glow and increasing moisture.
For example, I recommend Dr. K's ABCG Repair Serum. It contains not just retinyl palmitate but also vitamin C derivatives and niacinamide. During this period, it's important to properly introduce retinyl palmitate, niacin (B vitamin), and vitamin C derivatives. It also contains glutathione, so it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. For anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, vitamin C comes to mind, and we discussed it with ABCG Repair Serum. But if vitamin C doesn't suit you, I recommend Astaxanthin. The Astaxanthin White Jelly Aquarist from Astalift provides brightening. Astalift uses astaxanthin, which actually has almost the same antioxidant power as vitamin C. Vitamin C is very powerful and effective but degrades easily. To restore vitamin C, Dr. K uses what they call a "vitamin cocktail," adding vitamins A, C, and E plus glutathione in a cycling system. If you use vitamin C alone, it weakens quickly. Astaxanthin doesn't have this basic problem. That's why they use only astaxanthin, though astaxanthin itself must be made small to penetrate skin—something Astalift does well. So either use a formulation that prevents vitamin C from breaking down or use astaxanthin, which doesn't degrade easily and maintains its oxidation-reduction ability. Use these approaches from your late 20s to 30s.
When you reach your late 30s and 40s, not only does transparency decline, but firmness decreases and wrinkles and sagging appear. For care, I think it's good to use products marketed for stratum corneum care. The pioneer of stratum corneum care is Dior's Capture. They released a new Lux Serum on January 10. When the stratum corneum doesn't adhere properly, neither the epidermis nor the dermis functions well, causing decreased firmness. As you age, stratum corneum adhesion naturally declines. This contains Lys Complex that connects the epidermis and dermis. Inflammation causes senescent cells to form. They activate NK cells to eliminate senescent cells. When skin cells have reduced oxygen transport, ATP, necessary for skin renewal, decreases. But adding lots of oxygen creates reactive oxygen species, so this product contains components that increase oxygen carriers. It increases skin energy, activates NK cells to eliminate senescent cells, and maintains stratum corneum care with Lys Complex while handling senescent cells. This is what the new Lux Serum does, so please use it carefully from your late 30s to 40s.
Regarding stratum corneum care, there's Rice Power Extract No. 11, like the Rice Power Extract No. 11 Plus in Lirish Essence Wrinkle Shot. It works on the stratum corneum, improving skin renewal and reducing wrinkles while caring for the dermis. Using such products is very important from your late 30s to 40s. This season was also reformulated, and there's definitely Pola's Wrinkle Shot Medical Serum. It contains NEEDLEOne, Pola's unique ingredient. Previously, Wrinkle Shot could only be used on specific areas, but starting January 1 this year, it can be used on the entire face. It can now be used full-face for not just deep wrinkles but also latent ones. Since overall wrinkle concerns will increase, you might consider adding it.
What about people 40 and older? Based on the above, adjust the texture. Even people with very oily skin experience decreased sebum production. After that, continue transparency care, anti-inflammatory care, and stratum corneum care, plus adjust texture to match your skin type. You might switch stratum corneum care products to those with more oil, or add cream to current products for something richer. Change the texture appropriately as you progress through your 40s, 50s, and 60s. Continue with inflammation care, stratum corneum care, stratum corneum care, and transparency care as essential elements.
To summarize: In your 20s, apply sunscreen and use moisturizing that suits you. For added ingredients, niacinamide or vitamin C. From your late 20s to 30s, focus on transparency care. Improving barrier function and reducing inflammation are crucial. I recommend fermented skincare because it contains various amino acids and peptides, which are perfect for regulating barrier function and reducing inflammation. Vitamin C is also important for reducing inflammation, but it's fragile. Either use vitamin C with proper vitamin cycling or use stable astaxanthin. Also, if you want to add glow and use retinol, start with retinyl palmitate from your late 20s to 30s.
From your late 30s to 40s, stratum corneum care becomes absolutely essential. Continue transparency and anti-inflammatory care while adding stratum corneum and senescent cell care. Use products like Dior's Lux Serum or those with Rice Power Extract No. 11 for stratum corneum care. For specific wrinkle concerns, use pure retinol or NEEDLEOne for wrinkle improvement, whether for spot application or full-face use.
So how was that? Of course, starting stratum corneum care or senescent cell care in your 20s is completely fine. What I discussed today is what you absolutely should do, so it's not that you can't do stratum corneum care in your 20s. It's just the minimum you should do during this period.
So today I've discussed age-based skincare. If you have questions like "What about this care?" please write in the comments. Also, we do limited-membership live streams every Tuesday. We cover deeper content not discussed in regular videos and answer questions. It's 90 yen per month, so I'd be happy if you'd register for membership. Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
