Hello everyone! I'm Tomori Ara—oh, I messed up...
What happened? What happened? What happened? What happened?
Huh, should we start from partway through?
Hello everyone! I was trying to say "I'm Tomori Ara" but I messed it up.
It's fine, it's fine, what happened?
This might not be something I should really talk about on this channel.
Then don't say it.
It's the kind of thing where whether you believe it or not is up to you. Urban legend? I actually like those quite a bit, I watch them a lot. The July 5th thing.
That one was actually on Yahoo News, right? Even overseas, it's become like "Something huge is going to happen in Japan, so maybe don't come to Japan right now?"
Yeah, seriously, seriously.
Honestly, there have been things like this before, right?
There have been.
But in the end, nothing happened.
More often than not, nothing happens.
In Japan, you never know where a big earthquake or disaster might strike, so it would be good if this leads people to prepare and take precautions without thinking "it's not my problem"—but something like "this is the end, use up all your savings" or whatever, I think that's a bit different. Have you ever used a portable toilet?
Never have.
You really should try it out.
Practice with it?
Practice. I once talked with someone from a company that provides toilets to disaster areas, and they told me, "Did you know these have an expiration date?"
Is that right?
Those are the solidifying type, right? So apparently if you leave them for a long time, they gradually absorb moisture and become harder to solidify properly. They said it's really important to try using it first to learn how it works, and to write down when you bought it so you can check—not exactly an expiration date, but something like that.
I'll check on that.
That's a great point. So I tried it myself, one by one. They told me it's good to try it with coffee. Because the smell, you know, bad odors are a concern. Coffee has a pretty strong scent, so I tried putting coffee in it to see how much the smell would actually leak out. They told me it's good to test that, so I tried it.
Doctor, since you're a physician, a dermatologist—is there anything you'd recommend from a dermatological perspective?
A while back, I actually made a YouTube video about disaster prep items.
That's right, that's right.
Was that a thing?
It was.
Sorry, I don't remember.
Well, anyway. I think I mentioned this before, but about half a year after the Great East Japan Earthquake, L'Oréal set up a place as part of their support activities for disaster victims, called "Let's Talk," and I was able to go there with them. What I brought at that time was cosmetics—cleansers, makeup items, sunscreen. I brought sunscreen along with me at the time, and I remember thinking, "Do people really need sunscreen right now?" I thought maybe portable toilets or clothes would be more useful, but the people who gathered were incredibly happy.
Is that so?
Honestly, people can't really say things like "I want cosmetics" or "I want to draw my eyebrows" or "I want to put on lipstick" or "I want to wear a little foundation."
Yeah, that's definitely hard to say.
Because they're in the middle of rebuilding, so that feels like a luxury.
Right, like an accessory almost.
But it's part of everyday life, isn't it? Not being able to do that weighs on people emotionally, I think, but they end up thinking that wanting it is somehow indulgent. Everyone feels that way. So being told "please take these, go ahead" as a form of support made them really happy. At that time, I decided I should set aside some things that only I could provide, so I have a few things prepared. Hold on a second.
Okay. Should I go get them?
I'll get them, I'll get them.
Understood.
Here we go. Let me just put this in a paper bag.
A paper bag?
For now.
So you gathered these up for now?
I gathered them. First, the portable toilet I mentioned earlier is this one—look, here I've written the purchase date. This says 2024, so I bought it last September 24th. As for where it's from, it's from a helmet company.
Let's open it up a bit.
When I tried various ones, this one solidified the most, and here's what's inside—it says it's made of biomass material, so the odor control is pretty solid.
I see, I see.
This solidifying agent really hardens well.
So it solidifies in 5 seconds?
Yeah. This is really good, and it also lasts 10 years.
Wow, that's amazing.
It lasts surprisingly long, so I keep about two boxes of this—since we're a family of five.
Yeah, that makes sense.
But this gives you 7 days' worth, 35 uses. So with these two boxes, it lasts about two weeks. Also, since the water might not come out, I think spray-type items and things like toners are pretty necessary. When I went with L'Oréal, having La Roche-Posay's thermal water made people really happy. So in that sense, thermal water is nice—you can spray it easily since it's just water, so it works anywhere. That's why I don't just put it all in one big container—of course I have some on that shelf, but I use it as I go.
You use it while it's in rotation.
I keep about two bottles, always have two on hand, and when one runs out, I add a new one.
I see, it's like a stock-rotation system.
Yes, a stock-rotation kind of thing. With cosmetics, if you suddenly use something you're not used to, your skin can get irritated. So I always make sure to use it myself regularly, thinking that way it'll be ready to use in an emergency too. So while using that, there's also this disposable face-washing towel.
Something like that?
Yes, having these is helpful for times when regular rough paper towels won't do, or when there's no water for your face but you still want something gentle without friction—that gives a bit of peace of mind.
That does sound reassuring.
I have a lot of these stocked up too, thinking they'll be useful if something happens. And along those lines, you really can't wash your face without water. This one is Pola's Cosmology, called the Space Crew Kit—it's a kit that lets you wash your face even in space. This is interesting because there's no water in space. It's a cleanser you can use even where there's no water. Apparently space is extremely dry. This works fine even there. If the water really does stop running, you can wash and moisturize with this. So I use things like this when traveling too—that way if an emergency comes up, I already know how to use it, which gives some peace of mind. Since these get used up gradually, I plan to replace them with new ones, but I keep them stocked. I also bought a bunch of these together in bulk and keep them in the same space, in the same area—I think it's good to have things like that.
Also, this one—Clé de Peau's wipe-off makeup remover. Wipe-off removers can feel a bit rough, but Clé de Peau's doesn't feel rough at all, and it removes makeup without needing to rub hard. So I use it when I'm really exhausted and just can't be bothered, or when I need to use cleansing sheets at the clinic—I often bring this along. So it's something I can use in daily life too. Since there's no worry about it causing irritation, when the rotation runs low I just add a new one to stock. That way it's ready when needed. Speaking of which, Clé de Peau's cotton pads feel amazing on the skin. I had a patient recovering from an illness who said, "This area stings so I can't touch anything, but Clé de Peau's cotton still felt nice on my skin." For times when even towels can't be used, I've used it a bit on children too. Cotton pads are disposable, but I figured it's better if they feel nice on the skin, so I keep these stocked as well. Keeping a stock of your favorite cotton pads might be a good idea.
Also, this is an eyebrow tint. You apply it thickly for about 10 minutes, then peel it off, and you won't need to draw your eyebrows for 2-3 days. You could apply it before bed and peel it off in the morning—I thought that could be surprisingly useful, so I included it for that reason. And this is a bit outside a dermatologist's usual perspective, but candles too. Once when the power went out at home, I thought I didn't have any candles, but I tried lighting a candle I'd received as a gift. Candles smell nice, right? My kids were like, "Oh, that smells nice," so it turned into something positive. Before, I would just give candles away to someone else since I have kids and didn't want to light them, but I realized they can double as interior decor too, and be useful in situations like that. So now I keep candles around, planning to use them if something happens. And of course, basics like bandages, a frying pan, and lip balm. Some people want lip care rather than color, so I keep lip items in the same box so they're accessible anytime.
It probably varies from person to person, but rather than being afraid, if you properly prepare, you won't panic when something happens. Right after a disaster, people are often too shaken to even notice these things.
Actually, I know someone who said that after a while, they start noticing all sorts of things and it really starts to bother them, so preparing in advance really is important.
At the clinic, we use disposable underwear sometimes. So it's good to stock up on that too, for that kind of feminine care.
Hygiene really is important.
I wanted to introduce the idea that having some spare underwear can be helpful, in case anyone needs it. I think it's best to use things as you go—keep a stock of items you regularly use, and imagine, "Oh, this could also be used this way."
Voices from disaster-affected areas about these kinds of needs are hard to hear, since people can't really say those things out loud, so this kind of information hasn't really come up before.
I think keeping at least the basics—eyebrow items, lip care, sunscreen—on hand is a good idea from a dermatological standpoint. I don't think July 5th will actually bring anything, but there's no harm in being prepared even if you never end up using it, so I think it's worth doing in that sense.
If any of you have your own disaster prep items you'd like to share, please feel free to write about them in the comments!
Nomori-kun, thank you as always for today.
