Nobori: Hey, Dr. Tomori. I really wanted to ask you about this — there was big news that Shiseido posted a 52 billion yen deficit, and I wanted to ask if there's anything we can do about it. Dr. Tomori: Got it. Nobori: When you keep seeing headlines saying "52 billion yen deficit," it makes you worry that something bad is happening to Shiseido, and maybe their sales are really struggling. Dr. Tomori: Well, a deficit does make it sound like sales are bad and things aren't really selling, but while it is technically a deficit, there are also accounting/structural reasons behind it. Let's talk about why this deficit happened, keeping that in mind. Going back to 2019, before COVID, this all started when Shiseido acquired a certain brand. Do you remember? It was a brand called Drunk Elephant. At the time, "clean beauty" was being talked about as the next big trend, especially among young people in America, and Drunk Elephant was seen as a leader in that space. Shiseido, aiming more at the North American market than the U.S. broadly, wanted to spread clean beauty, so they bought Drunk Elephant for a whopping 90 billion yen. Surprising, right? In 2019, Drunk Elephant's sales were extremely high and growing, so Shiseido bought it for 90 billion yen thinking it would be their gateway into the huge North American market. But what happened right after 2019? Nobori: COVID. Dr. Tomori: Exactly. COVID hit. Nobody could have predicted that, and in many ways everything came to a halt. Cosmetics sales dropped, and doing global business became difficult in various ways, causing things to stall. While market expansion was impossible, the clean beauty boom passed by — it was like everyone had bigger things to worry about. Even now, if you say "clean beauty" in Japan, it doesn't really click, does it? The fact that you haven't heard much about it shows it was a passing trend. But that doesn't mean the clean beauty concept itself was bad — it just collided with COVID. It's like COVID became the trend before this other trend could take off, so I'd say it was just bad luck. They weren't going to recover the 90 billion in one year; it was meant to be recovered over several years, but even after 6 years, there's still no clear path to recovery. So they decided to book the loss now — you could call it "cutting their losses" — and that's what happened this time. As the news often mentions, there's also talk of a slowdown in Asia. Shiseido is a national brand that Japan is proud of, so people in China and across Asia love Shiseido. But Chinese brands have been growing in a similar way. Just as Japanese people love Japanese brands, Chinese consumers are increasingly favoring Chinese brands, and the quality of those brands keeps improving. Also, to touch on a slightly sensitive topic, there have been frictions between countries, leading to boycotts, and while inbound tourism was at its peak, there are now signs of it leveling off. With all these factors combined, sales in China have dropped somewhat, and I think that, combined with everything else, contributed to this deficit. It's definitely not that something is wrong with Shiseido itself — their technology and research are truly outstanding — so in that sense, if this deficit dragged on, that would be concerning. So as much as possible, we want to help them, that's how we feel. Nobori: Certainly, seeing that news, everyone feels a bit worried about Japanese companies ending up like this. Dr. Tomori: That's why I saw a lot of posts on social media saying things like "I want to help save Shiseido," and I feel the same way. Research costs an enormous amount of money. Speaking of Shiseido's research, this year, 2025, they came out with something truly amazing in the cosmetics world — ULTIMUNE. ULTIMUNE is something that could only be created by Shiseido because of their deep research into skin immunity. They discovered "memory T cells," which are involved in removing things that inevitably occur as our skin ages — aging cells. This is honestly groundbreaking, almost medical-grade research. The fact that they incorporated that into cosmetics with ULTIMUNE is amazing. In terms of balancing immunity, the research into macrophages is actually done for Elixir. When this immune balance breaks down, collagen gets destroyed and the skin loses firmness and sags. So the brand that talks about having firm, plump skin is indeed Elixir. Also, when it comes to Shiseido, you can't forget retinol. Shiseido is really the only one who can claim to have wrinkle-improvement effects with retinol. Retinol itself is prone to oxidation, but they've stabilized it, and while not everyone avoids redness completely, they've worked on preventing retinoid reactions while still delivering wrinkle improvement. And we shouldn't forget their proprietary ingredient, 4MSK. It's a whitening active ingredient, but it's really interesting — it prevents melanin production, and it also boosts the skin's own power, promoting turnover, so it has some excretion effect too. Normally, whitening active ingredients either suppress melanin production or promote its excretion — usually just one or the other — but this one, as an additional minor effect, also promotes excretion. There's nothing quite as powerful as that. Also, I believe it was last year, they won the Cosme Award for a lotion I've talked about many times on my YouTube channel — Eudermine. Eudermine focused on capillary research, discovering that having healthy capillaries improves cell turnover. The epidermis itself has no blood vessels — only the dermis does — so at first glance, you'd think it has nothing to do with epidermal cell turnover. But through proper research, they confirmed that when capillaries extend and develop well, it actually contributes to the renewal of epidermal cells. And for something on the pricier end, there's THE GINZA — a fairly expensive cream, around 100,000 yen. It incorporates capillary research along with various other things, and this time also includes lymphatic vessel research, plus epidermal cell research, and even research into fragrance compounds and how scent affects the skin — they've really researched it thoroughly. So while you might think Clé de Peau is the most expensive, THE GINZA is actually above it. Shiseido really covers such a wide range. Also, this might be surprising, but NARS is part of the Shiseido group too, and their Light Reflecting Powder is a masterpiece. Their tools are amazing too. Nobori, you might not use an eyelash curler, but— Dr. Tomori: Shiseido's eyelash curlers are amazing, and their brushes too are incredible. Nobori: The ones sold really are quite good, I think. Dr. Tomori: What I just talked about were the higher-end items, but for example, that same 4MSK is also included in Aqua Label, and the immune ingredient is also in d program — Shiseido makes everything from expensive department store cosmetics to things you can buy at the drugstore. So what we can do is understand just how amazing Shiseido's research is, and use their products knowing that this research is packed inside them — I think that's the best way to help save Shiseido. Nobori: So, following this conversation, what do you think is the best of Shiseido? Dr. Tomori: Whoa, you're suddenly putting me on the spot. So you want me to pick the single best thing from Shiseido? This might cause some backlash, but that THE GINZA cream I mentioned earlier — apparently only two people do the final formulation. There are only two people who can say "I made this." It's either Tomori or Nobori, so to speak. I'm not great with creams, but the texture is just melt-in, so silky. With the anti-inflammatory ingredients and lymphatic vessel ingredients, it becomes wonderfully plush — that's part of it too. But if I'm being real, I'd say Elixir, right? Elixir is like Shiseido's volunteer brand — if you use it, you really can't go wrong. When friends in Miyako Island or people in areas without department stores ask me "what should I buy," I often tell them "you'll be fine with Elixir." So I do think Elixir is the answer. Nobori: And that Elixir, too, exists because of research like THE GINZA's. Dr. Tomori: Exactly right. Nobori: So, how was it? Did I manage to help save Shiseido? I think a lot of people don't really know the details, so I really felt how important it is to know these things. Let us know if there's anything else, Dr. Tomori. Dr. Tomori: Got it. Nobori: Well then, thank you very much.
