Hello everyone, I'm dermatologist Arata Tomori. Today I want to talk about five beauty-food ingredients that I really want everyone to eat. Of course, taking care of your skin with skincare products is important, but our skin is also made from what we eat. So by properly eating foods and ingredients that promote beautiful skin, we can achieve beautiful skin from the inside out. This time I'll introduce five beauty-skin ingredients that I want you to eat every day if possible, and that are practically always in my refrigerator at home. Let's get right into it. The first one is tomatoes. You might think this is obvious, but tomatoes contain lycopene. Lycopene suppresses the breakdown of collagen and helps repair sun damage, so I really want you to actively incorporate it. You might think tomato juice, which contains lycopene, would be fine, but I want you to eat whole tomatoes. That's because whole tomatoes include the skin, so they contain dietary fiber too. Also, vitamins A, C, and E are often lost when juiced due to heating, but eating the whole tomato preserves them properly. So while tomato juice is fine, for wrinkle prevention, sun damage prevention, and spot prevention, I want you to eat whole tomatoes every day. The next ingredient is broccoli. When you think of broccoli, you probably imagine people who do strength training eating it with chicken, and that actually makes sense — broccoli might have the highest protein content among vegetables. How much does it contain? As much as 4.3g per 100g. So of course people who work out should eat it, but for beautiful skin too — our skin is made of protein. So if you want to supplement protein, broccoli is great, plus it contains vitamin K, dietary fiber, and iron. Besides protein, which is a component of skin, it also contains things that boost blood flow, as well as phytochemicals, so in that sense it's an indispensable ingredient for beautiful skin. In my house, boiled broccoli is always in the fridge, so whenever I feel like I need more greens, I add it in. That's why cherry tomatoes and broccoli are always served as a side dish — they're easy, convenient go-to foods. Broccoli contains sulforaphane. There's something called AGEs (advanced glycation end-products) — when excess sugar builds up in our bodies, it binds with proteins, which can cause skin dullness. When AGEs increase, the skin tends to become somewhat dull, and sulforaphane helps reduce that. So if you want your skin to have a clear, radiant look, I definitely recommend eating broccoli. The next ingredient is kale. When you think of kale, you probably think of green juice, and that's fine too, but I actually want you to eat kale leaves whole and raw. That's because kale is packed with dietary fiber — turning it into juice removes that fiber. It also contains a lot of folic acid, which is needed as a coenzyme when making red blood cells. Besides folic acid, it also contains iron and potassium. Since women menstruate every month and lose blood, they tend to become anemic. When you're anemic, blood can't reach the extremities properly — and blood is essentially our natural beauty serum. Nutrients and oxygen are carried through the blood, promoting skin metabolism. So properly addressing anemia is essential for beautiful skin. That's why kale is a great ingredient for preventing anemia. It's also rich in dietary fiber, which improves gut health. And it's known that improving gut health increases skin's moisture levels, so in that sense, kale is a highly recommended ingredient for beautiful skin. Next is salmon. Fish in general is good for the skin, but salmon contains astaxanthin. What is astaxanthin? It has very strong antioxidant properties, so it helps suppress the formation of spots caused by UV exposure — meaning it helps prevent dark spots. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which help prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin caused by UV rays. This helps improve things that damage skin elasticity, so it's also said to help prevent sagging. By the way, did you know that salmon is originally classified as a white fish? It actually falls into the white fish category. As a white fish, when it eats crustacean plankton, astaxanthin accumulates in its body, which is apparently what turns its flesh pink/red. Anyway, setting that aside — even though it's technically a white fish, it contains DHA and EPA, though not as much as blue-back fish. These EPA and DHA make blood flow smoother and, like astaxanthin, have anti-inflammatory properties, so in that sense it's a very necessary food for the skin. I highly recommend everyone incorporate it. Lastly is blueberries. Blueberries are not only packed with vitamins and minerals, but each berry also contains dietary fiber. And above all, they contain polyphenols. These polyphenols are said to help improve skin dullness and help prevent the decline of skin elasticity. They also contain chlorogenic acid, though not as much as coffee. Chlorogenic acid is actually known to boost blood flow, so eating blueberries every day is truly essential for beautiful skin. Happily, it's said that freezing blueberries actually enhances their effects, so in my house, the freezer always has frozen blueberries, which I put on yogurt or eat with a bit of honey drizzled on top. Rather than giving kids some artificial ice cream or sherbet as a snack, it's better to give them that natural sweetness with a bit of honey on top — honey is good for gut health too, and the abundant fiber in blueberries also improves gut health, while providing plenty of antioxidant components that work even when exposed to sunlight. So I think this is a perfect ingredient both as a snack for kids and for moms who want beautiful skin. To summarize, the beauty-skin ingredients are tomatoes, broccoli, kale, salmon, and blueberries. In my house, as I mentioned, tomatoes and broccoli are served as a side dish every time. I eat kale finely chopped in salads every day — actually, I've become obsessed with a salad from a place called "Kale no Osama" (King of Kale) that you can order on Uber Eats. I probably order kale salad from them so often that they must think, "this person orders every day." So I thought about making something similar at home, and now I chop kale finely, add apple and blue cheese, and drizzle a special homemade dressing over it. When made into a salad, kale becomes surprisingly easy to eat, so I recommend making it into a salad and eating it raw rather than as green juice if possible. As for salmon, in my house we designate one day a week as "salmon day," or we buy smoked salmon to eat regularly. Deciding to eat it at least once a week makes it easier to incorporate as a routine, so I recommend doing that too. And as I mentioned, if you keep blueberries frozen, you can always sprinkle some whenever you want, so please make sure to always keep blueberries in your freezer. How was that? Skincare is important, but ultimately, it comes down to food. Our bodies are made from what we eat. So if you're going to eat anyway, I think it's better to choose foods that promote beautiful skin. I eat these every day myself, so please use this as a reference if you'd like. This channel talks about beauty and health topics in an easy-to-understand way, so please subscribe if you enjoyed this.
