Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today, I'd like to dive deep into the 10th generation HAKU, which launches on February 21st. It incorporates all the whitening research recognized by the world, and when I attended the presentation, I was so moved that I had tears in my eyes. There are such wonderful research findings and themes incorporated, so I'm going to delve deeply into the 10th generation HAKU. First of all, HAKU was launched as a whitening essence in 2005. That was about 20 years ago. From that time, it's no exaggeration to say that it has led the whitening essence market. So every time it was reformulated, I was amazed. The 10th generation HAKU incorporates 20 years of Shiseido's whitening research all into one product. Plus, last year at IFSCC, which is like the Olympics of cosmetics, the technology incorporated in this product won the excellence award. I thought it would definitely be included in HAKU, but since the information embargo was only lifted this year, something amazing is happening. I couldn't say anything for a long time, but now that the information is finally released, I wanted to tell you right away. First, it's difficult to explain without reviewing these 20 years, because honestly, each of these findings could be a whole video. Let me explain what was discovered in the 2000s. It was understood that in areas with spots, of course, chronic weak inflammation continues. This keeps melanocytes, which produce melanin, activated, so melanin is continually being produced. This was already common knowledge. But then researchers investigated what specifically was happening in these areas and what was occurring beyond this chronic inflammation. They discovered that keratinocytes containing melanin were not dividing. Normally, keratinocytes go away through cell turnover, right? So melanin-containing keratinocytes should also leave through cell turnover, which theoretically means spots shouldn't form at all. However, it turned out that keratinocytes containing large amounts of melanin had reduced cell division ability. So instead of dividing, they just stay there. This was discovered in 2008. So the idea was to selectively support melanin-containing keratinocytes to divide more actively, like normal keratinocytes do through cell turnover. The ingredient added for this was lotus seed lactic acid bacillus fermentation broth. This selectively supported the removal of keratinocytes containing melanin. But then, a few years later in 2010, something contradictory was discovered. Cell turnover in areas with spots was actually accelerating. So earlier we said melanin-containing cells were stagnant and we needed to speed them up, but now in 2010, it turns out cell turnover is already fast. Confusing, right? When researchers looked deeper, they found something interesting. The keratinocytes near the basement membrane that don't contain melanin were abnormally proliferating. It turned out that keratinocytes containing melanin were sending signals that stimulated melanin-free cells, causing abnormal cell division. Then, because cells are dividing rapidly, abnormal signals are being sent. These abnormal signals stimulate melanocytes and cause them to produce melanin, creating a negative spiral. So melanin-containing cells cause normal cells to proliferate and divide, but because this cell division is abnormal, it sends error signals that further stimulate melanocytes to make melanin—a negative loop. This was discovered in 2010. So they needed to both stop the abnormal signals from error cells and prevent melanocytes from overproducing melanin. This is why tranexamic acid and 4MSK, Shiseido's signature ingredients, were incorporated. You'd think that solved it, but tranexamic acid research didn't stop. Next came 2012, focusing on the stratum corneum and basement membrane. Everything we discussed was about chronic inflammation, errors, and excessive cell division, which they successfully suppressed. But then researchers noticed something odd about the basement membrane. They discovered that heparan sulfate, a component of the basement membrane, was decreased in areas with spots. Fibroblasts in the dermis send stimulating signals to melanocytes. Heparan sulfate in the basement membrane blocks these signals. When heparan sulfate decreases, stimulatory signals from dermal fibroblasts constantly reach melanocytes, causing melanin production. So to increase heparan sulfate, they added Madonna lily extract, which suppresses heparan sulfate breakdown, and glucosamine to promote heparan sulfate synthesis. You'd think that's complete, but it wasn't. In 2017, they started researching spots and blood vessels. This was also presented at the Japanese Society of Cosmetic Dermatology. They discovered that vascular endothelial growth factors were increased in areas with spots. When you have too many of these growth factors, the blood vessels that form become fragile and easily damaged, creating abnormal blood vessels. These abnormal blood vessels release factors that stimulate melanocytes. Abnormal blood vessels were causing melanin production! To suppress melanin-stimulating factors, they added Areca extract. Now blood vessels seemed covered too. But wait, it turned out blood vessels held more secrets, discovered in 2020. Also presented at the Society of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2020. What scared me when I heard this was that some spots treated with lasers clear up beautifully, while others leave pigmentation that won't go away. You never know which kind until you try, but there was actually a hidden reason. The key was those abnormal blood vessels we mentioned. Spots with many abnormal blood vessels in the dermis are prone to leaving pigmentation after laser treatment. That's frustrating! You go through laser treatment hoping it works, then pigmentation stays and won't clear. Of course they didn't just accept that. When they researched why abnormal blood vessels form in 2020, they discovered that when UV hits the skin, a component called urokinase is activated in the dermis. Urokinase and the vascular endothelial growth factor we mentioned earlier work synergistically to create even more abnormal blood vessels. So UV-exposed areas easily develop abnormal blood vessels, and when urokinase is involved, even more form. This is why laser treatment tends to cause pigmentation. They couldn't just suppress the vascular endothelial growth factor—they also needed to suppress urokinase. So in 2020, they added St. John's Wort extract. Now blood vessels should stop proliferating. Then came 2022, focusing on cell adhesion. Going back to the original epidermis, so to speak. They discovered that in areas with spots, the adhesion molecules, what's called desmoglein, were decreased. When cell adhesion becomes unstable, factors that activate tyrosinase, the source of melanin, are released, and nearby melanocytes start producing melanin. Also, when desmoglein decreases and adhesion becomes unstable, melanocytes, which normally move around freely while producing melanin, somehow stop moving. So they keep producing melanin in one spot. So they needed to improve cell adhesion and increase desmoglein. They added rose hip extract. Now the foundation was better. But it didn't end there. Then came 2024, when Shiseido discovered that due to aging, the same UV exposure causes spots more easily. That makes sense, right? When you were a kid, even with the same UV exposure, spots either didn't form or disappeared quickly. But now at 47, spots form easily. Basically, when UV hits, inflammatory substances like IL-6 increase and stimulate melanocytes to produce melanin. But in areas with spots, IL-6 receptors—the "catchers" that receive IL-6—are increased. So spot areas are even more prone to forming spots. They had already discovered that receptors increase with age, which was surprising because usually things decrease with age. Yet these inflammatory signal receptors increase. So even with the same amount of IL-6, they receive more signals, which explains why older people form spots more easily. So they decided to suppress the formation of IL-6 receptors by adding Hiram lemon extract. Now it seemed complete. A 20-year span of research continued until 2024, which is Shiseido's whitening research history. Everything was about spots. But the 2024 IFSCC award went to senescent cells. What do senescent cells have to do with spots? That connection discovery is what made IFSCC recognition so significant. Cells have organelles that produce cellular energy. You've learned about mitochondria in biology class. Mitochondria are in cells, producing energy in the epidermis. Whether a cell is healthy depends on whether mitochondria properly produce energy. In spot areas, mitochondrial activity in epidermal cells decreases. Energy production drops. When cell division stops due to lack of energy—like if you can't eat without energy, so you just shut down—cells mistakenly think they're dead. They mark themselves as "I'm a dead cell," displaying a senescent cell marker. That's the beginning of senescent cells. With decreased mitochondrial activity, cells become senescent. Senescent cells do something terrible—they release SASP factors that turn neighboring cells into senescent cells too. How awful! Senescent cells promote melanin production, causing melanin formation. Unlike the previous focus on melanocytes producing tyrosinase, senescent cells promote melanin independently of those mechanisms. So the previous research since 2008 was about preventing melanocytes from producing melanin. But we've now discovered that senescent cells are also involved in melanin production. That's why IFSCC recognized this finding so highly. With many senescent cells, melanin keeps being produced, so senescent cell care is also important. Isn't it amazing? All the research I've explained is incorporated into the 10th generation HAKU. The active ingredients are tranexamic acid, 4MSK, and glycyrrhizic acid—a triple ingredient combination. By combining tranexamic acid, 4MSK, and glycyrrhizic acid in the right balance, they discovered that keratinocyte mitochondrial activity increases. Increased activity means more energy production, making senescent cell formation less likely. With less senescent cell formation, SASP release is suppressed. The 10th generation isn't just about melanocytes. It's not just about promoting metabolism. By also suppressing senescent cells, it achieves whitening for the whole skin. That's the 10th generation HAKU. Isn't it amazing? This is world-recognized Japanese technology. Tranexamic acid, 4MSK, glycyrrhizic acid. Some might say these ingredients are in other products too, so it doesn't matter. But that's not true. Twenty years of whitening research is condensed into this one product. Since it launches in February and I wanted to discuss this research, I waited for the information embargo to lift, which is why I'm telling you now. I'll talk about how it feels and other details when it launches, so please look forward to it. I hope this passionate explanation helps you understand how amazing Japanese technology is. So, what did you think? I got pretty passionate talking about this today, but it's truly a wonderful product, so please check it out. I'll also include a link to the 9th generation, so you can see what came before and look forward to February. I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye!
