Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori. Have you heard a lot about stem cell cosmetics recently? Many people think that stem cells are cells that can become anything, so if they're included in products, they might be good for skin rejuvenation. However, there are actually some major pitfalls. Among the stem cell cosmetics I've seen, there are some that make me go "hmm," so I want to properly explain what stem cell cosmetics really are and which ones are trustworthy. If you're interested, please watch until the end.
First of all, stem cell cosmetics do not actually contain stem cells. When you think about it, it makes sense because cells are derived from humans, and if such things were included in cosmetics, it would be ethically strange and dangerous in many ways. So with stem cell cosmetics, the key characteristic is that they contain ingredients that stimulate stem cells.
Recently, there's also been talk of exosomes. Exosomes are the culture medium created when stem cells are cultured—the liquid used when culturing stem cells. Since various signals from stem cells are present in the culture medium, when this is added to cosmetics, it stimulates stem cells. That's roughly what exosomes are. However, there's a pitfall here. While some properly cultured stem cells may be used, for example, if laboratory stem cells are cultured many times repeatedly, like making dashi (Japanese broth), the output diminishes. Additionally, the components that emerge vary completely depending on the origin of the cells. So honestly, even I don't know which exosomes are good or which stem cell culture media are good. If a company doesn't have their own research facility, it's truly difficult to know their origin, so finding trustworthy sources is really challenging.
As for whether I use stem cell cosmetics myself, I do use ones based on research I trust. What are these? They're items where stem cells themselves are carefully researched to understand how stem cells affect the skin, and based on that research, ingredients that activate stem cells are incorporated. Rather than stem cell culture medium, because it's based on stem cell research, you can truly understand how to activate stem cells.
I'd like to introduce three brands that I think are seriously researching stem cells.
First is Covermark's Cell Advanced series. Covermark is actually conducting stem cell research together with Osaka University. When researching skin, particularly studying where epidermal and dermal stem cells come from, they discovered that bone marrow stem cells might be involved. There's a disease called epidermolysis bullosa where blisters form abundantly on the skin. Researchers studying this thought that epidermal stem cells, which constantly regenerate, might be decreasing. However, they found that's not the case. They researched why the skin where blisters constantly form and break down doesn't seem to lose many stem cells, and discovered that epidermal stem cells are actually supplied from bone marrow stem cells. This research is the origin of their approach.
Bone marrow stem cells travel to the dermal area via blood vessels, where they differentiate into dermal stem cells. Based on this research, they discovered a technology to guide bone marrow stem cells to the dermis, which became the ingredient Kusunoki bark extract. By including Kusunoki bark extract, bone marrow stem cells in the blood properly move to the dermal area and become dermal stem cells, even without injury or burns. This has been included in their lotion for a while.
However, I mentioned that bone marrow stem cells become dermal stem cells, but the skin has both dermis and epidermis. The dermis has blood vessels, but the epidermis doesn't. So how are epidermal stem cells created? Blood vessels enter around the basement membrane, so it's presumed they're supplied from there, but there's difficulty in differentiation to epidermal stem cells. They thoroughly researched this as well. They found components that promote epidermal stem cell differentiation in addition to Kusunoki bark extract guiding bone marrow stem cells to the dermis—these are neem leaf extract, black tea extract, and eggplant fruit extract from the Sennan region of Osaka. By combining these three in a complex, they're properly guided not just to become dermal stem cells but also epidermal stem cells. This is included in the serum.
With this lotion and serum, they guide bone marrow stem cells to the dermis, becoming not just dermal stem cells but also epidermal stem cells. Now, a cream was released this season that includes further knowledge about bone marrow stem cells. It turns out bone marrow stem cells not only create dermal stem cells but also send stimulation to fibroblasts in the dermis, signaling them to synthesize collagen. So it's not just about dermal stem cells becoming fibroblasts—it's about activating existing fibroblasts. The cream includes ingredients that increase active factors in fibroblasts from bone marrow stem cells. That's Kiharadaiou extract. So this is truly based on joint research with Osaka University, properly researched data on bone marrow stem cell guidance, making Covermark's Cell Advanced a product you can expect significant results from.
And there's this one. Many of you are probably seeing this for the first time—the brand Augustinus Bader, which originated in Germany and was released in Japan this year. Dr. Augustinus Bader is a German physician and scientist-researcher who developed this. Bader was originally specialized in burn treatment. He noticed that when burns occur, some develop scars while others heal cleanly. When investigating why, he discovered that stem cells in the skin emit various signals—sending signals to collagen and fibroblasts, etc.—resulting in wound healing. He first developed a medical treatment and is currently applying for a patent on a unique technique to promote wound healing by stimulating stem cells. Since the patent hasn't been granted yet, we don't fully know what's inside, but this is included in the Augustinus Bader brand.
The Augustinus Bader brand's top seller is a cream with TFC8, but I thought the Retinol Serum with retinol was excellent. I've noticed many dermatologists abroad recommend this, so I got it when it was released in Japan. Besides having TFC8, it includes pure retinol, niacinamide, and panthenol. Overall, by combining with retinol, it properly emits multiple signals from stem cells, creating firmness and radiance. Since it's designed based on treatment data carefully researched by Professor Bader, it's another brand you can expect significant results from.
Lastly, there's the Dior Capture Serum that many of you know. Dior has actually been researching stem cells for over 20 years. Just last year, there was a stem cell symposium where various researchers from Paris gathered, and Kyoto University, led by Professor Shinya Yamanaka's iPS Cell Research Institute, is also conducting joint research on stem cells. They discovered that epidermal stem cells' function deteriorates when the adhesion between epidermis and dermis weakens. They found an ingredient to improve this epidermal stem cell adhesion—Rhamnose extract. By including Rhamnose, epidermal stem cell adhesion improves, promoting epidermal turnover, creating radiance, and also signaling the dermis so both dermis and epidermis receive anti-aging care. This is the Total Serum approach.
With hyaluronic acid included to prevent leakage, there's also the newly released Retinol Shot that adds retinol to improve stem cell adhesion, promotes hyaluronic acid production in the epidermis while promoting collagen production in the dermis. From research on epidermal stem cell adhesion, by including various ingredients, it pursues comprehensive anti-aging care. Since they use research-based data, Capture is truly a product you can expect results from.
So, what did you think? Stem cell cosmetics lately seem to get a bad reputation, but the three brands I introduced today properly partner with universities and research institutions, researching stem cells themselves and incorporating unique proprietary ingredients. Unlike products from unknown sources, these are properly researched. If you're hesitant about choosing stem cell cosmetics, please check out these three brands. Products with thorough research and proper proprietary knowledge have real appeal. Whether you use them or not, I hope you'll learn that this kind of research exists.
