Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Right off the bat, let me ask—are you drenched in body odor? You might not realize it, but a certain lifestyle habit could be making people around you think, "That person smells a bit like garlic." If you're curious, please watch until the end. First of all, body odor varies greatly from person to person. For example, there's a condition called bromhidrosis (armpit odor disorder), where an abundance of apocrine glands in the body causes a strong scent. Aside from that, the smell emitted by the body also changes with age. As I mentioned before regarding "the scent of high school girls," Rohto Pharmaceutical found that a compound called lactone is emitted by young people in their teens, giving off a peach-like scent. Since this scent is unique to women in their teens and twenties, they created a body soap designed to mimic this lactone scent—I introduced this product before, called Deoco. Separately from that, you've probably heard of "curry smell." This is emitted starting around your 40s, caused by a compound called nonenal. Since this has a fruity, curry-like smell, it's called "curry odor." There's also something called "middle odor," which smells like rancid oil. This commonly occurs in men in their 30s and 40s, caused by a compound called diacetyl, which produces an oily smell. To summarize: lactone research is done by Rohto Pharmaceutical, nonenal (curry odor) research is by Shiseido, and diacetyl research is by Mandom. I'm 46 myself, so I guess it's inevitable that curry odor is coming from my body. But it turns out that lifestyle habits can also change body odor. For example, when you're under a lot of stress, you emit what's called "stress odor," which smells like green onions. Shiseido has researched this, and it's said to be caused by gases such as allyl mercaptan and dimethyl trisulfide being released from the body. But this time, it turns out that sleep deprivation can produce a garlic-like smell! This was discovered through joint research between Shiseido and the Faculty of Science at Tokai University. It turns out that when you're sleep-deprived, your body emits a gas called diallyl disulfide, which has the same scent as garlic. Here's how the experiment worked: they gathered men and women in their 20s and 30s who self-identified as having both good and bad sleep nights. Since factors like food can influence body odor, participants were asked to keep tobacco and alcohol consumption within certain limits, but their sleep schedule wasn't fixed—they were told to just live normally. But whether you slept well isn't just about how you feel, right? To evaluate this fairly, they had participants wear devices to measure whether they fell asleep properly, their heart rate, and other factors, distinguishing between nights of good sleep and nights of poor sleep quality. Next, since they needed to accurately measure gases emitted from the skin, they attached gas measurement devices to the skin within 30 minutes of waking up and collected data on what types of gases were being emitted. The results showed that on nights of good sleep, very little gas was emitted, but on nights identified as sleep-deprived, the gas diallyl disulfide was found to be released from the body. This is said to be the main component of garlic odor. On days with good sleep, apparently there was almost no detectable scent even at a distance of 50 centimeters. But on days when people felt they hadn't slept well, enough gas was produced that the smell was noticeable even at the same distance. Even if you're careful about body odor—not smoking, wiping away sweat frequently, showering and using body soap—if you continue to lack sleep, people around you might still think, "This person smells a bit like garlic." I find that pretty shocking. Unfortunately, Japanese people are said to be one of the least-sleeping populations in the world. According to a 2021 report by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), Japan has the shortest sleep duration among the 33 countries surveyed. As people enter their 30s and 40s, women often start dealing with childcare or caregiving responsibilities, while men in their 30s, 40s, and 50s tend to get busier with work. Gradually, sleep cycles become disrupted, and on top of middle odor and curry odor, sleep-deprivation-induced garlic odor starts to appear too. It really feels like a double whammy. Since this is just a research announcement for now, I expect Shiseido will probably develop cosmetics or deodorant products based on these findings in the future. But since it's only a research report at this point, if you want to avoid people thinking you smell, it's important to properly cleanse yourself in the bath, but getting enough sleep is also a crucial point. If you're really concerned about body odor, make sure to sleep well. Sleeping properly supports skin turnover, which improves skin quality, helps suppress body odor, and maintains overall bodily homeostasis. So try to avoid looking at your phone before bed, doing intense exercise right before sleeping, or going to bed on a full stomach. I've published several videos about improving sleep quality, so please check those out as well. Not just sleep duration, but sleep quality matters too—please be mindful of this as a way to prevent body odor. Well, today's topic was a bit shocking, but I hope you found it interesting! On this channel, I talk about health and beauty topics like this in detail, so please subscribe if you enjoyed this. See you in the next video—goodbye!
