Hello everyone, this is Yui Tomori. Have you ever noticed that you're becoming a bit forgetful lately? Since I do YouTube, I often find myself thinking "what was that ingredient called again..." and this kind of forgetfulness has been increasing for me. So today I'd like to talk about preventing brain aging. Since this is a common concern for many people, if you're worried about brain aging, please watch until the end. Earlier I mentioned having that kind of "what was it again" forgetfulness, and of course that is a sign of brain aging, but it's a bit different from the scary conditions of dementia or Alzheimer's disease. For example, with dementia or Alzheimer's, you don't even realize you've forgotten something. In my case, when I think "what was that ingredient called," and then remember "oh right, it was tranexamic acid," I recognize tranexamic acid, so I know that what I forgot was tranexamic acid. But for people with Alzheimer's, or as dementia progresses, even when told "weren't you trying to say tranexamic acid?" they might respond "tranexamic acid? I think I'm hearing that for the first time" — forgetting even the term itself. This is what happens as dementia or Alzheimer's progresses. However, conditions like dementia don't occur suddenly — they result from ongoing brain aging. So if you want to suppress the onset of dementia, it's important to focus on how to slow down this brain aging process. Today I want to talk about three habits for preventing brain aging. By doing these properly, I hope you can prevent brain aging and its progression into dementia. The first is diet. This comes from data based on a 20-year study of Japanese people conducted by the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, which found that people with greater dietary variety are less likely to develop dementia. Some of you might find this a bit puzzling, but essentially it means eating a wide variety of foods. It's not just about eating regularly, but about not always eating the same things — having varied menus and eating a wide range of foods evenly is associated with a lower likelihood of developing dementia. What does this variety include? For example: meat, fish, eggs, milk, soy products, green and yellow vegetables, fruits, and seaweed. When researchers examined whether people were eating these foods evenly, they found that the group eating a balanced variety had nearly a 40% lower risk of cognitive decline compared to those who didn't. So rather than eating only meat because you like it, or only soy products, the key point is to eat meat, fish, soy products, dairy products, vegetables, fruits, and seaweed all in a balanced way. Also, a large-scale study by Kyushu University found that groups who regularly ate soy products, green and yellow vegetables, and dairy products had a lower risk of dementia. Additionally, research from Tohoku University found that groups eating fish, vegetables, mushrooms, and seaweed had a reduced rate of developing dementia. So to summarize, it's better to eat a wide variety of foods evenly. It has long been said that eating a nutritionally balanced diet is good for health, and while it would make for a great viral video if I could say "eating this one food prevents dementia," that doesn't seem to be the case at all. As has always been said, eating a balanced diet as a dietary habit does seem to help prevent dementia, so rather than focusing on just one food, the priority should be maintaining a balanced diet overall. With a balanced diet as the premise, we now have some understanding of which components to actively include and which to limit. One thing recommended for active intake is polyphenols. Polyphenols are known to break down and remove beta-amyloid, which is called "brain garbage" and is the root cause of dementia. There are many types of polyphenols. For example, catechins found in green tea, which is familiar to Japanese people, resveratrol found in red wine and berries, and curcumin found in turmeric, among others. There's also an interesting piece of data showing that among people over 50, those who eat curry at least once a month show differences in cognitive function compared to those who eat it less often — this might be due to the curcumin found in turmeric, a base ingredient of curry spices. So building on the dietary variety mentioned earlier, actively consuming polyphenols does seem to have some effect. Another point for maintaining brain health is fat intake. Omega-3, specifically DHA, is contained in the membranes of brain nerve cells, and is said to be particularly abundant in the hippocampus, which governs memory. It's said that taking DHA can help prevent degeneration of hippocampal nerve cells and support memory retention. DHA itself also helps suppress inflammation in the body, which is another reason it's recommended to actively consume DHA and omega-3s. Separately, there's also trans fat, a type of saturated fat found in beef and pork fat and fried foods. Data shows that people with higher blood levels of trans fat are more likely to experience cognitive decline, so it's also known that it's best to limit processed foods and fatty cuts of meat that are high in trans fats. So again, as I've said several times, this doesn't mean you should avoid beef entirely because trans fat is scary — rather, the key is to reduce fatty portions. On top of maintaining a balanced diet, it's very important to actively consume polyphenols and omega-3 fats like DHA. The second habit for preventing brain aging is exercise. When it comes to exercise, walking is the best option. You probably already sense that walking is good, but why is that? Walking increases blood flow, which is known to increase a substance called nitric oxide that promotes vasodilation. This nitric oxide makes blood vessels expand more easily, improving blood flow, which in turn makes blood vessels more flexible — and this is thought to promote the breakdown of beta-amyloid, the "brain garbage" mentioned earlier. Also, aerobic exercise is known to produce a protein called BDNF. This BDNF is said to be one of the energy sources for creating nerve cells in the hippocampus, so by increasing BDNF through aerobic exercise, new hippocampal cells can be created, which may help reduce forgetfulness. It's also extremely beneficial to talk or do simple mental tasks like addition while walking. So rather than intense exercise like strength training, walking that promotes blood flow is said to be the best option. The third habit, which is actually said to be the most important, is communication. As people age, opportunities to participate in society tend to decrease. When young, you're required to interact with many people — going to school, going to work, or as a mother, interacting with other moms. But once you reach a certain age, whether through retirement or children growing up, opportunities for communication tend to decrease. Humans are creatures that live in communities and communicate with others. Some people may prefer being alone, but it's known that engaging in lots of communication — having conversations or entering new relationships — helps prevent dementia and brain aging. While it may be difficult to try something new every time, communication is extremely important. Social isolation tends to accelerate the progression of dementia, so even for family members living alone, it's important to actively communicate, such as by calling them, and to maintain a habit of communicating with someone yourself. To summarize, brain aging that progresses can lead to dementia, so to prevent brain aging, the first thing is dietary habits — eating a balanced diet while actively including polyphenols and quality fats like omega-3s. The second is exercise habits — not intense exercise, but walking that promotes blood flow is enough. This helps create flexible blood vessels that prevent the buildup of beta-amyloid, and stimulates the hippocampus, which governs memory retention, so please make sure to walk enough to improve blood flow. And finally, communication. This is a very important factor in preventing dementia. As people age, opportunities to participate in society may decrease, but starting something new — even something like starting a YouTube channel — and participating in new forms of communication is very important. So today I talked about three habits for preventing brain aging. This channel shares information about beauty and health. In our membership program, we hold YouTube live streams every Wednesday where we dive deeper into beauty and health topics and answer questions that can't be covered in regular videos. It's 90 yen per month, so I'd be happy if you'd consider joining. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
