Hello everyone, I'm Tomori Nitta. Summer is just around the corner, and today I'd like to talk about the three key skincare ingredients you should incorporate during the summer months.
Your skin ages in summer! Ultraviolet (UV) rays are constantly beating down on us. As regular viewers of this channel already know, UV radiation is responsible for approximately 70% of skin aging. That's why proper sun care in July and August is absolutely essential. For sunscreen recommendations, I've already covered a variety of options this year — including those for sensitive skin and for reapplication — so please check those videos out.
While applying sunscreen daily is a given, it can't block UV rays 100%. So today, I want to discuss which skincare ingredients can help minimize sun damage even further. I'll cover both ingredients you may already have in your current products and new items worth adding to your routine. Please watch until the end!
■ Two Key Points for Summer Skincare
**1. Anti-Inflammation**
Sunburn is the single greatest cause of skin inflammation. I've been saying for over a decade that the three things you must never do to your skin are: sun exposure, friction, and dehydration — all of which cause inflammation. When inflammation occurs, it triggers melanocytes to produce melanin (leading to dark spots), and can also cause redness and itching. Controlling inflammation is directly linked to preventing skin aging.
For this reason, it's important to incorporate anti-inflammatory ingredients into both your morning and evening skincare routines in summer — especially in the morning, to preemptively combat the UV damage you'll be exposed to during the day.
**Anti-inflammatory Ingredient ① Vitamin C**
Vitamin C is the number one anti-inflammatory ingredient for skin. During summer, make sure to include it in your morning skincare routine without fail — whether in a toner, serum, or lotion. Both pure Vitamin C and Vitamin C derivatives are effective.
Affordable recommendations include Melano CC and Quality First Derma VC. If your current products don't contain Vitamin C, you can add Tunemakers' Vitamin C derivative concentrate directly to your existing toner, or apply it as an additional layer after toning.
**Anti-inflammatory Ingredient ② Tranexamic Acid**
Transexamic acid is another leading anti-inflammatory ingredient that also helps prevent skin roughness. It works through a different mechanism than Vitamin C, so using both together is perfectly fine and even more effective. For example, you could use a toner with tranexamic acid (such as Transino) and a serum with Vitamin C, or vice versa.
Products containing tranexamic acid include Transino serums and toners, as well as Tunemakers' tranexamic acid concentrate.
A note on oral tranexamic acid supplements: while they are effective for treating melasma (chloasma), there is insufficient evidence to support their use for preventing new sun-induced age spots. I would not recommend taking them solely for preventive purposes if you don't have melasma. Please consider topical and oral use separately.
**2. Whitening (Brightening)**
The second key point is skin brightening. Among the many whitening active ingredients, the one I especially recommend for summer is **Niacinamide**.
Niacinamide is well known for its anti-wrinkle properties, but it is also a recognized whitening active ingredient. It suppresses melanin production signals triggered by UV exposure, provides antioxidant protection against oxidative stress from inflammation, and promotes skin cell turnover.
Niacinamide is currently very trendy, and it is now widely available at affordable price points in many products. It can be used in the morning for brightening and at night to support skin repair and regeneration.
Recommended products include Quality First Derma LVC, Time Secret Mineral Medicated Lotion (which contains both niacinamide and glycyrrhizinic acid), and Tunemakers' niacinamide concentrate.
■ Summary: The 3 Key Summer Skincare Ingredients
1. **Vitamin C** (anti-inflammatory, brightening, melanin reduction) → Especially in the morning
2. **Tranexamic Acid** (anti-inflammatory, brightening) → Especially in the morning
3. **Niacinamide** (brightening, antioxidant, turnover promotion) → Morning and/or evening
Note that Vitamin C and tranexamic acid are also recognized brightening ingredients, so they offer dual benefits: anti-inflammatory and whitening. Use these three ingredients consistently in the morning alongside your sunscreen to protect your skin from UV damage. In the evening, focus on skin repair with your favorite trusted products.
