Hello everyone, this is Momoki Anata. Today I encountered a video that I truly want everyone in the world to watch, so I wanted to share it with you all. I also want to talk about why this video moved me so much, which connects to the reason I started YouTube in the first place. As we approach the end of 2024, I'm filled with gratitude that someone made a video like this, and I wanted to share that passionate feeling with all of you in this video.
So what kind of video is it? It's a video by a cosmetic scientist named Kazunosuke. When I watched it, it had been posted about 10 days earlier, and it's titled "Korean Cosmetics vs. Japanese Cosmetics: Which Would a Professional Choose?" When I watched this video, I thought, wow, he's really verifying something amazing. As Kazunosuke himself says at the beginning, trying to determine which cosmetics are better or worse is fundamentally crude in itself. But since he receives so many questions like this, he decided to share his perspective on it.
He talked about the good points of Korean cosmetics and the good points of domestic (Japanese) cosmetics, and shared his own thoughts, and there was so much I found myself nodding along to. Since I don't want to give everything away, I'll link Kazunosuke's original video in the description, so please check it out. I don't want to spoil too much, so I'll just touch on it lightly.
In this video, Kazunosuke wanted to discuss both the good and bad points, so he examined which is superior in which areas by factoring in various elements—design, technical capability, effectiveness, price, safety, trustworthiness, and marketing. He discussed these seven perspectives.
When I watched that, it resonated with me because, as a physician who sees patients at a clinic while also being involved in the beauty industry—I've served as a judge for Best Cosmetics awards for many years—I've had many opportunities to talk with researchers and learn about the latest cosmetic information. However, there was rarely a chance to talk about the research basis, or what ingredients are in a particular cosmetic, or what technology is incorporated. Somehow, as Korean cosmetics rose to prominence, there was this feeling that Korean cosmetics are amazing while Japanese cosmetics are kind of lackluster. So I wanted to show, from a researcher's perspective—even though I'm not directly involved in that industry myself—that Japanese cosmetics are not inferior at all, that a lot of excellent research goes into them, by sharing this on YouTube. I hoped this could become something that helps people choose their cosmetics. That's why I started filming videos at the end of 2019 and launched this YouTube channel in 2020.
Of course, since we're talking about cosmetics, there are many different factors involved, but Japan genuinely has very high technical capabilities. For example, there's something called the IFSCC, which is like the Olympics of cosmetic research, and Japan has an overwhelmingly high number of awards there in terms of technology. So in that sense, Japan's technical capability is high, and its safety standards are also very high.
So why does it seem like Japanese cosmetics lack technology? This actually comes down to legal issues. There are laws prohibiting companies from advertising that a cosmetic contains a certain technology and is wonderful because of it. For example, even if a cosmetics company has been researching something for a very long time, there's a law that prohibits connecting that research directly to the product in advertisements. So there's this situation where companies can't really state what specific benefits a cosmetic product has.
However, overseas cosmetics operate under different regulations than Japan, so they're allowed to say things like "good for pores" or "good for whitening" clearly. Without understanding this, people might think that since Japanese cosmetics don't write anything on their packaging while Korean cosmetics have so much written on theirs, Korean cosmetics must be superior. But in reality, it's just that Japanese products don't disclose it—behind the scenes there's actually a lot of research history and development. Kazunosuke said the exact same thing, and I was really moved thinking, ah, since he's a scientist, he really thinks deeply about these things too.
Another point is the issue of price. I think there's definitely an image that Korean cosmetics are cheap, and that's actually true. Korea has a national policy of promoting beauty and medical aesthetics to the world, and the government provides subsidies, which is part of why they can be priced more affordably.
Also, companies like Amorepacific have large in-house research facilities, but that's actually relatively rare in Korea. Japan, on the other hand, tends to take safety very seriously and conducts thorough in-house research and development, which takes more time. This is why Korean cosmetics can release new products one after another more quickly, which I think is one of their appealing points.
Amorepacific in particular has developed their own proprietary retinol, which I really like, and there are things that only they have. But Japanese cosmetics manufacturers actually have quite a few of these unique innovations too. For example, POLA's Niall One, or Yushindo's Rice Power No. 11—these are original developments where Japanese cosmetics are not falling behind at all.
If asked which I prefer, I wanted to convey the feelings of the people who are seriously conducting research and development—that was the original motivation for starting this YouTube channel. So I thought Kazunosuke's video, which put these thoughts into words, was truly wonderful. And as I said at the beginning, it's not about which is good or bad. Since there are good and bad points on both sides, I hope you can take a comprehensive view and decide which you personally prefer. Rather than thinking that Japanese cosmetics don't have cute packaging or don't advertise their effects much, I hope you can recognize that there's a lot of effort and various factors behind the companies' choices.
Of course, Korean cosmetics also have many wonderful products—Amorepacific's proprietary retinol and other research efforts, for example. But Japanese researchers are just as talented and plentiful, and the range of research subjects—hyaluronic acid research, collagen research, skin texture research—is genuinely extensive and diverse.
Unfortunately, Korean cosmetics receive cheering support from both the government and the Korean public. But Japanese domestic brands, as I mentioned, don't receive subsidies and aren't particularly supported or cheered on by the government. The reason for this is regulation. If people don't know what data is behind a claim of effectiveness, they can't really cheer it on or think it's amazing. So I think it's time to reconsider these regulations, so that both the government and we as individuals can start saying "Japanese cosmetics are amazing," just like Korean people proudly say their own country's cosmetics are amazing. I believe Kazunosuke's video could be a catalyst for that kind of change, and I started my YouTube channel hoping to become exactly that kind of catalyst myself.
If many people raise their voices about this, maybe regulations and the government will eventually respond and change. So I was truly happy that someone well-known spoke up about this. Of course, Korean cosmetics are wonderful too, and I hope you'll remember that domestic Japanese brands also have solid research and development behind them, and try to use both in a good balance.
So, this ended up being a somewhat heavy and passionate discussion, but it was truly a video that moved me when I watched it, so I'll link Kazunosuke's video in the description—please check it out and give it a like.
2024 is coming to an end soon, but in 2025 I want to continue sharing how cosmetics are created based on incredible research, and how amazing cosmetics really are. So please subscribe to this channel as well. I'll see you in the next video. Goodbye.
