Hello everyone. I'm Arata Tomori. As spring approaches, we're starting to wear lighter clothing, aren't we? When we wear lighter clothes, the thing that concerns us is body hair. I work at a clinic, so I recommend medical laser hair removal at clinics. However, I see that many home hair removal devices are discussed on this channel and on SNS, and people often ask me, "What's the deal with home hair removal devices?" "What about safety?" "What about effectiveness?" "What precautions should I take?" Since I receive many such questions on my YouTube and SNS, today I want to explain from a dermatologist's perspective what home hair removal devices are, and I'd like to discuss what points you should consider when purchasing one. If you're interested in home hair removal devices, please watch until the end.
So what's the biggest difference between medical laser hair removal and home hair removal devices? Honestly, it's the power. Medical laser hair removal is permanent hair removal. Since Japanese hair is black, a laser that reacts to black things is used, and it destroys the hair follicle cells called hair matrix cells, which are the "mother cells" of hair. Because the hair matrix cells are destroyed, hair no longer grows. This is the principle of medical laser hair removal. So medical laser hair removal is basically permanent hair removal. Once a laser is applied and the hair matrix cells are destroyed, hair doesn't grow back from that hair follicle. Since there are many hair follicles, occasionally one or two hairs might grow back, so strictly speaking, it might not be truly permanent, but hair doesn't return to its original state with medical laser hair removal.
What home hair removal devices do is apply light, which causes slight damage to the hair follicles. Since the hair matrix cells receive minor damage, hair growth slows down. So it doesn't mean hair won't grow at all, but if you used to shave once a week, with a home device it might become once a month or two months. Think of it as the damage slowing down hair growth. Some manufacturers suggest that continued use might eventually eliminate hair, which isn't impossible, but strictly speaking, medical and home hair removal devices are completely different. The output is different, and the form—laser versus light—and the heat power are different. Home hair removal devices remove existing hair and make it grow back more slowly, while medical devices prevent hair from ever growing back. These are completely different things.
The application of heat is the same between them. So the scariest risk is burns. If you've had medical laser treatment, you know about burn risks. As the laser is applied with sharp clicking sounds, extremely cold gas is sprayed out. While the laser is being applied, cold gas is sprayed to cool the area, reducing burn risk. Then anti-inflammatory medication is applied to prevent burns. It's very difficult to do the same thing with home hair removal devices. The scariest thing is getting burned while using a home hair removal device. Modern home devices can be used on VIO areas and the face in various places. If you get a burn while trying to remove unwanted hair and it becomes hyperpigmentation, that's terrible, isn't it? For example, if you get burned at night, you can't go to a hospital immediately. So when choosing a home hair removal device, from a doctor's perspective, I want you to choose based on how much cooling capability it has. Good cooling means they've considered burn risk and implemented measures to prevent burns. I'd recommend choosing devices that consider this.
Among them, this is one I think is great. It's a device called "Mirai" from MyTrex. What impressed me about this is that it has a power button here, right? Can you hear the sound? When you touch it, it's incredibly cold. It cools down to 4.3 degrees Celsius. Normal temperature is about 25-26 degrees, so that's about a 21-degree drop in rapid cooling. The sound of this fan is key to rapid cooling. This is the double-layer cooling structure that only appears in MyTrex products. There are apparently fans rotating both clockwise and counterclockwise. They spin around inside, sending a direct, strong breeze, creating rapid cooling. You might think that's strange, but the principle of how airplanes fly also works on the same principle—having fans rotate both clockwise and counterclockwise allows the cooling function to be delivered straight. By cooling straight ahead, as I mentioned, when you turn on the power, you can achieve a 21-degree drop in cooling. So by having a fan with the same principle as an aircraft engine inside, you get high safety with effective cooling.
Cooling reduces the burn risk I mentioned, and also lightens pain, which is very important. Let me try it a bit. I'll turn on the power. Can you hear the loud sound when it turns on? Wind is coming out from here too. It's incredibly cold. I've already had medical laser hair removal, so the effectiveness is uncertain for me, but the part that contacts the skin is called sapphire crystal, which is extremely cold. When I apply this and press this button, here. Since I don't have hair, it doesn't unnecessarily fire on hairless areas. When you press here, the power level shows in color, and apparently it senses your skin color to prevent the power from becoming too high. Pretty smart, right? It doesn't fire unnecessarily on hairless areas, and it cools properly, so I think the safety is quite high.
Attachments also easily snap on for the face, and this one is for VIO areas, so you can quickly switch them. Another great thing I noticed is that it can also be used as a beauty device. It's called the DPL function. When you attach this accessory. What is this function? Clinics also do something called IPL, which is light therapy. In clinic light therapy, you can completely change the filters. Light effectiveness depends on wavelength, and regular beauty devices can't select which wavelengths to use. Typical beauty devices emit light wavelengths of about 500 to 1200 nm, and you can't select which ones emit. So in clinics, they use different filters—for example, 532nm to reduce redness, or 515 and 590nm to break down melanin—to select specific wavelengths. Since home devices can't really do that, they generally emit all wavelengths from about 500 to 1200nm, making it hard to feel the effects. But this MyTrex DPL mode, when you attach this accessory, emits only 500 to 650nm light. So you're selecting only the wavelengths needed for beautiful skin.
Isn't that amazing? Of course, medical light therapy machines and IPLs have very specific wavelengths, but narrowing it down to 500-650nm in a home device is quite rare, I think. So today, regarding body hair removal, I highlighted how excellent this cooling is, but body hair removal is typically limited to summer and skin-showing seasons. For example, when it gets colder and you put it away in a closet, that's wasteful. So during those times, you can use the DPL mode as a beauty device, which I think makes it pretty worthwhile.
Incidentally, this DPL works not just on the face but also the neck. Recently I've really been thinking neck care is important, so being able to care for your neck is great. So today I explained how to choose body hair removal devices, and introduced the MyTrex Mirai among them. The scariest thing about home body hair removal devices is getting burned. So more than power, I want you to choose devices that have proper cooling—ones that feel genuinely cold when applied to your skin. And having additional modes is a bonus. Please consider these points when choosing. Thank you for watching to the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
