If your current emulsion or gel cream is no longer keeping up, it's time to upgrade to a richer cream. Today, I'll introduce three options all priced around 1,000 yen or less. --- **① Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Rich Cream (Rohto Pharmaceutical)** First up is the Hada Labo line — but I need to clarify something. I intended to feature the **Gokujyun Premium (yellow packaging)** cream, but it was sold out at my local drugstore, so I ended up with the standard **Gokujyun (white packaging)**. Please note that my actual recommendation is the Premium version. Rohto Pharmaceutical is a pharmaceutical company with extensive hyaluronic acid (HA) research, particularly through its eye drop products. Before the recent reformulation, the Hada Labo line contained 5 types of HA with varying molecular weights. What makes IHADA exceptional is its base ingredient: **highly purified petrolatum (vaseline)**. Petrolatum comes in various grades, and the highly refined version — used medically under the name "Propeto" — removes nearly all impurities. This high-grade petrolatum is typically expensive, making it remarkable to find in a budget product. Here's how the two variants differ: - **Protective Balm**: Highly purified petrolatum + **Glycyrrhetinic acid stearyl** (an oil-soluble anti-inflammatory ingredient). Effective for acne-related inflammation, and formulated as non-comedogenic. Best for those dealing with dryness, skin irritation, and acne. - **Clear Balm** (my actual recommendation): Highly purified petrolatum + **Tranexamic acid**, a brightening ingredient used clinically to treat melasma. Also non-comedogenic. Best for those experiencing mask-induced melasma or pigmentation concerns, in addition to dryness. Choose the Protective Balm if acne and irritation are your main concerns, or the Clear Balm if you're also worried about dark spots or melasma. Both are priced around 1,760 yen. --- **③ Moistage Essence Cream RR Extra Moist (Kracie)** Finally, Moistage Essence Cream RR Extra Moist — priced under 1,000 yen, and available on Amazon for around 636 yen. The standout feature of this cream is the inclusion of **retinyl palmitate** (a retinol derivative) at this price point, which is truly impressive. Retinyl palmitate offers the following benefits: - Promotes production of hyaluronic acid and collagen - Accelerates skin cell turnover - Increases epidermal moisture levels It's worth noting that retinyl palmitate is one of the gentler, slower-acting retinol derivatives. Results won't appear overnight, but consistent use over time helps build firmer, more resilient skin from within. Additional moisturizing ingredients include hyaluronic acid, collagen, and placenta extract (which also has brightening properties).
