[Skincare to Do Before Bed — Summary of the December 22 & January 12 Live Streams] Q1. Are tanning machines okay for the skin? People like Shigeru Matsuzaka and those with deep tans seem so energetic. A. Honestly, using a tanning machine does cause damage to the skin. It's called a "tanning" machine because it actually tans your skin. They may look energetic, but their skin is often quite dry and prone to wrinkles. As a dermatologist, I don't think anyone would recommend it. Q2. About two weeks ago, a small blue-black blood vessel (with no bulge) appeared on my nose, between my eyes. Since it's in a spot not covered by a mask, it's been bothering me. Is covering it with makeup the only option, or is there anything skincare can do? A. The fact that the blood vessel is visible means the skin there is thin. Since it's difficult to thicken the skin to hide the blood vessel, skincare alone probably won't solve this. The best thing you can do is keep the area well moisturized. Q3. My acne isn't improving with my current toner. Is it okay to buy the toner, lotion, and serum recommended at a clinic? A. It depends on your age and specific concern, but if you're struggling with acne, cosmetics alone won't cure it. As I've said many times on this channel—and other doctors say the same—skincare is only supplementary; it can't treat conditions. If you want to actually treat your acne, you should get treatment at a clinic. It's fine to get product recommendations from a clinic after receiving proper treatment and diagnosis, but simply using the recommended products won't cure your skin on its own. Skincare should be used as a supplement alongside proper treatment. Q4. What products would you recommend applying right before bed? After my bath, I use Elixir toner, lotion, serum, and a spa treatment. There's about a 6-hour gap between my bath and bedtime, and the heater makes the room dry, so I'm wondering if I should apply something right before sleeping. (Age 38) A. In that case, something like Aqua Collagen Gel would be good. Since you're already using toner and serum, you probably need a cream or gel-type product. For a cream, the Spa Treatment "Skin Tou" cream would work well. If you're already using cream or emulsion, layering an all-in-one product on top is also a good option. I sometimes use an all-in-one myself when flying and the air is dry. So either try the Spa "Skin Tou" cream, or an all-in-one product. Q5. Since mask-wearing started, I've noticed a bluish-white line clearly forming under my nose, following the curve of my upper lip like a mustache. I've also had mild folliculitis from salon (esthetic) hair removal—not sure if it's related. How can this be treated? A. This sounds like folliculitis. If so, I'd recommend switching from salon hair removal to medical laser hair removal. It's probably more noticeable because your facial hair is naturally thick. I don't think it's really related to wearing masks. Q6. Today is my 27th birthday! What's essential to do at this age to avoid looking older in the future? I feel like I've hit a turning point where my skin quality is starting to change. A. Happy birthday! Don't worry, turning points come at 30, 40, and beyond too. At 27, the most important things are: absolutely avoid sun damage—sun exposure is the biggest enemy—and prevent dryness. As for skincare, starting whitening-focused products is a good idea. It might be a little early, but incorporating retinol or vitamin C for sagging prevention is also worthwhile. But above all, sun protection is the most important thing you can do. Q7. What's the difference between vitamin C and niacinamide? Which is better for acne-prone or combination skin? A. They're completely different ingredients. Vitamin C has strong antioxidant properties and also has a degreasing effect that removes oil. Niacinamide (nicotinamide) is a type of vitamin that tends to promote skin cell turnover, contributing to brightening effects. For acne, I'd recommend vitamin C. Q8. On my days off, I keep the curtains closed all day and avoid sunlight entirely, staying indoors under artificial lighting. Even for a quick 10-minute round trip to a nearby convenience store, should I wear facial sunscreen? After how many minutes outside does sunscreen become necessary? A. There's no strict rule for this. I often describe sun exposure like a savings account—one day, it "matures" and results in spots or wrinkles. It's about how much you accumulate over time, and everyone's "maturity point" is different. Skipping sunscreen for a 10-minute outing won't cause immediate spots or wrinkles, but it adds up. How often you do this per month, and for how many years, all contributes to the total. There's no absolute rule against it—it's about being mindful of how much you're "saving up" and deciding accordingly. Q9. As I'll turn 30 this year, I bought a pure vitamin C serum for spot prevention, but it causes itching and redness around my cheekbones. Would you recommend reducing use to once every 2-3 days, switching to a different serum, using a vitamin C toner instead, or switching to a different active ingredient? A. First, try reducing usage to once every 2-3 days. If you still experience itching, I'd recommend switching from pure vitamin C to a toner containing a vitamin C derivative instead. Q10. Should I avoid using a facial steamer before cleansing? I thought it might help open up my pores. A. Using a steamer before cleansing is completely fine. However, you don't need to open your pores to cleanse properly. The real benefit of a steamer is improving blood circulation by introducing warmth to the skin, rather than opening pores. Feel free to use it! Q11. How do you apply foundation? In a lot of makeup tutorials, people seem to rub it on. Since my skin is thin and prone to redness, I try to avoid friction. Do you have a recommended application method? A. I apply foundation pretty casually. For example, I'll place it here like this, then pat it on—tap, tap, tap. Rather than rubbing, I press down from above so the skin doesn't move, layering it on that way. Of course, if you rub vigorously every time, that will cause friction, which isn't good. So I'd recommend patting it on gently—tap, tap, tap—pressing down so the skin stays still, rather than rubbing. Q12. Does gaining weight cause sagging in the face? I've heard that gaining a little weight as you age is good—what do you think? A. Gaining weight and then losing it causes sagging. So if you gain weight, it's best to maintain that weight rather than losing it again. When you gain weight, your face gets fuller due to fat, but if you lose that weight, it leads to sagging. So either maintain your weight after gaining it, or if you do want to lose weight, consider getting a thread lift or face lift afterward. Thank you for watching!
