Hello everyone! I'm Dr. Nitta, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today I'd like to talk about three bad habits that destroy skin clarity and translucency. We all want that luminous, clear skin, don't we? As the saying goes, fair skin hides many flaws — and indeed, having translucent skin means having an even skin tone. Skin with true translucency has refined texture, no dark spots, and minimized pores. It's no exaggeration to say that what we call beautiful skin begins with translucency.
This skin translucency is greatly influenced by our daily habits. Skincare is one of them, and I'm sure many of you use toners, serums, and high-end creams to boost your skin's glow. But today, rather than discussing skincare products, I want to focus on three everyday habits that are actively robbing your skin of its translucency. If you stop these habits, you'll not only see better results from your skincare routine, but your skin will naturally become more luminous. Please watch to the end.
■Bad Habit #1: Smoking
The first bad habit that destroys skin translucency is smoking. You may have a vague sense that smoking is bad for your skin, but it is particularly devastating for skin clarity.
There is a study published by the Japan Society for Tobacco Control titled "Female Skin Condition and Smoking." It is a large-scale study involving 188,709 women aged in their 20s to 50s, examining how various lifestyle habits — including dietary balance, overeating and overdrinking, stress, sleep deprivation, UV exposure, air conditioning, and age — affect the skin. The researchers measured specific indicators such as the rate of stratum corneum exfoliation, corneocyte cell area, melanin content in the stratum corneum, sebum secretion, acne, and pore size.
Unsurprisingly, age is the number one factor that worsens skin condition. However, when it comes to the factors most closely linked to skin translucency — specifically, disruption of the stratum corneum and melanin accumulation in the corneal layer — smoking came in as a major culprit, second only to UV exposure for melanin-related changes.
Skin with true translucency has a well-maintained stratum corneum: corneocytes are uniform in size, the corneal layer is of appropriate thickness, and cell turnover occurs at a normal, steady pace. The study found that compared to non-smokers, smokers showed significantly higher levels of stratum corneum cell shedding, more melanin in corneal cells, greater skin dryness and itchiness, oilier skin with more acne, and more prominent pores.
Another key finding is that while skin damage from smoking is less visible in younger years, it begins to manifest strongly after the age of 25. Even if you don't notice the effects now, continuing to smoke past 25 will cause cumulative and increasingly visible skin damage.
Both conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes are equally harmful — a phenomenon known as "smoky face," characterized by loss of translucency and increased wrinkles and dark spots. If you want clear, luminous skin, please quit smoking.
■Bad Habit #2: Incorrect Facial Massage
The second bad habit is incorrect facial massage. Many people massage their face to improve their skin, but when done incorrectly, it can actually reduce skin translucency.
When skin is subjected to rubbing and friction, micro-inflammation occurs. Over time, this accumulates and leads to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, dullness, rougher skin texture, and worsening of friction-induced pigmentation such as melasma.
Face rollers and electric facial brushes can temporarily improve blood circulation and reduce puffiness, and used briefly and gently, they can give an immediate appearance of refreshed skin. However, massaging your face vigorously until it turns red every day constitutes excessive friction. This thickens the stratum corneum and causes inflammation that leads to dark spots and dullness.
If you want to use a roller, keep it to the jawline, neck, and lymph node areas to gently encourage lymphatic drainage. For electric facial brushes, pressing them against the skin is generally fine, but sliding them across the skin in a scrubbing motion is not. Think of it this way: pressing = OK, rubbing = not OK.
■Bad Habit #3: Sun Exposure Without Protection
The third bad habit is unprotected sun exposure. I know I say this often, but approximately 70% of skin aging is caused by UV radiation — so-called photoaging. The same study mentioned earlier also identifies UV exposure as the second biggest contributor to skin aging after age itself, and UV radiation has a greater impact on melanin accumulation than even smoking.
There is a benefit to sun exposure — UV rays stimulate vitamin D production, which supports immune function. However, if you want to maintain facial skin translucency, you should apply sunscreen to your face diligently. If you're concerned about vitamin D levels, consider supplementing it while protecting your skin from UV damage.
■Summary
The three bad habits that destroy skin translucency are: ① Smoking, ② Incorrect facial massage, and ③ Unprotected sun exposure. Eliminating these three habits alone will amplify the effects of your skincare routine and reliably improve your skin's translucency. Please put this into practice.
