Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Do any of you have habits in your daily life that you think are "probably good for your health" or "this is definitely the right thing to do"? Actually, some of those habits might be wrong. If they were just wrong, that might still be okay, but if you make one mistake with these habits, it could actually put your life at risk. Since "I didn't know" might not be an excuse, today I'd like to pick out three dangerous behaviors that you absolutely should not do, so please watch until the end, no matter who you are. First, warming your stomach when you have a stomachache. Many of you probably do this, right? When someone says "my stomach hurts," someone might say "maybe your stomach is cold, so warming it up might help," and indeed, warming it can sometimes help. However, if you make a mistake here, it can lead to a serious situation. Deciding to warm your stomach just because it hurts is a self-judgment. If the cause is something like appendicitis, food poisoning, or abdominal pain accompanied by inflammation, warming it can actually make things worse. In the worst case, if there's inflammation in the intestines, for example, warming could lead to peritonitis or spread the inflammation. So whether or not to warm your stomach should be decided based on whether there's inflammation present. What are the signs? For example, having a fever—this is something to be quite careful about. Also, vomiting—this could indicate food poisoning or inflammation in the body, so vomiting is a warning sign. Also, bloody stool—this could also indicate inflammation. Even without these symptoms, if the pain keeps increasing more and more, it might be better to stop warming it for the time being. There are also exceptions where warming is fine. For example, menstrual cramps—when you have period pain, warming is often better than cooling. Also, does anyone get stomach pain from stress? Like when you're nervous and your stomach hurts a bit. This is clearly not accompanied by inflammation or bleeding—you know from your own experience that it's stress-related pain. In these two cases, it's fine to warm your stomach, but if you have a fever or suspect there might be some inflammation, it's better to hold off on warming it for a while. Next, the second one: putting a paper bag over someone's head during hyperventilation. In dramas and manga, you often see someone hyperventilating being given a plastic bag to breathe into, or having a paper bag put over their face, and gradually they calm down. This method used to be practiced, but recently it's no longer recommended. Why? Because there's a risk of suffocation, so this practice has been discontinued. Also, telling someone to "just take deep breaths" during hyperventilation is absolutely not okay either. And giving them water to drink to calm down—this is also not good. For example, telling someone to take deep breaths can actually worsen the hyperventilation and cause them to faint, and drinking water carries the risk that water might accidentally enter the windpipe, causing aspiration. So please make sure not to do these things. The scariest part is that the cause of hyperventilation isn't always just panic. Hyperventilation can sometimes be caused by things like myocardial infarction or pneumothorax (collapsed lung). It's quite rare, but it does happen. If there's an underlying functional disease and you put a bag over their head, restricting oxygen, it could actually lead to serious danger. The correct response is: since collapsing would be dangerous, first have them sit down. Or lay them down. When laying them down, don't put them on their back—lay them properly on their side so they can vomit safely if needed; avoid the face-up position. And instead of saying "take a deep breath," encourage them to "breathe out." Since hyperventilation involves excessive inhaling, the guidance should be to exhale rather than take deep breaths. So instead of covering their face, you should say things like "breathe out, breathe out, breathe out" to encourage them. At the same time, gently patting their back and saying "breathe out, okay?" and "it's okay once you exhale" is important. If it doesn't improve and there's chest pain or numbness in the limbs, don't assume it's just panic-related hyperventilation that will resolve with time—there might be an underlying functional disease, so in such cases, please be sure to see a doctor. And finally, this is something I think many of you might do—taking a bath immediately after eating. Actually, taking a bath right after eating, especially right after dinner, is said to increase the risk of fainting. After eating, blood concentrates in the stomach and intestines to digest food. Additionally, when you take a bath, your blood vessels dilate because of the warmth. Also, as the surface of your skin turns a bit red, blood circulates more toward the skin as well. This means that blood which should normally go to the head instead goes to the extremities or the stomach and intestines because the blood vessels have dilated, causing the brain to temporarily experience an ischemic state. When this ischemic state occurs, you might feel a bit anemic, and combined with unstable footing, you could suddenly collapse. Also, dozing off comfortably while soaking in the bath is also a sign of this ischemic state. If you gradually lose consciousness while soaking in the bath, you could drown right there. So it's not just about collapsing—drowning while bathing is also a scary possibility. In this sense, right after eating, dozing off is like a form of fainting, and this is more likely to happen. The peak of digestion is about 30 minutes to an hour after eating, so to avoid various burdens on your body, it's best to rest for about an hour after eating. If you don't have time, try to bathe safely by just taking a shower instead of soaking in the tub. Also, taking an extremely hot shower puts a strain on your cardiopulmonary function, so even though summer is coming and you might think it's fine, it's better to take a quick shower with lukewarm water around 38 to 40 degrees Celsius. And I think the most important thing is, if you have family members at home, let them know when you're going to take a bath by saying something like "I'm going to take a bath now," and if you're a bit worried, it's a good idea for family members to check in, perhaps by listening to see if you're humming a tune or something. So, what did you think? These are three things many of you probably tend to do: warming your stomach when it hurts, covering someone's face with a bag during hyperventilation, and taking a bath right after eating. These are quite ordinary daily behaviors, but knowing versus not knowing can make a big difference in how you respond, so please use this as a reference. Thank you for watching until the end today.
