Hello everyone! I'm Chia, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. The hay fever season is almost upon us, and I've been seeing more and more patients since February. Every year, the news covers how much cedar and cypress pollen will be in the air. Researchers calculate this based on factors such as summer sunshine hours and rainfall from the previous year to estimate whether pollen counts will be higher or lower than the year before. Before talking about 2021, let me ask: how was your hay fever in 2020? Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people stayed indoors during February, March, and April, which may have made hay fever feel less severe. In fact, 2020 was actually a year with an exceptionally low pollen count. People with severe allergies still suffered, but those with milder symptoms may have barely noticed them at all. Unfortunately, 2021 shows a moderate increase compared to the very low levels of 2020. The pollen count is slightly above the threshold considered indicative of severe symptoms in some areas. However, it remains significantly below the 10-year average. So with proper precautions and appropriate medication, it should be manageable for most people. When it comes to treating hay fever, medications are the most common approach. However, overseas, localized treatments are often preferred: nasal sprays for runny noses, and eye drops for itchy eyes, as these work more directly on the affected areas. If your symptoms are clearly localized, I recommend visiting an ear, nose, and throat clinic for nasal sprays, or an ophthalmologist for eye drops. While hay fever is commonly associated with the nose and eyes, it also significantly affects the skin. According to research from Saitama University, pollen can burst upon contact with moisture in the air. When it does, it can absorb PM2.5, yellow sand, and exhaust fumes, turning into what can be called a "super allergen." This can trigger skin inflammation even in people who don't normally have hay fever. To protect your skin from pollen-induced dermatitis, it's essential to create a protective barrier on the skin. PM2.5 particles alone can cause skin inflammation, and UV exposure further worsens it. I always recommend wearing sunscreen 365 days a year, rain or shine — but during pollen season, it's absolutely non-negotiable. I personally use La Roche-Posay's UV Idea. A brand particularly focused on pollen-related skin issues is Decencia. Their product, the Ayanas Cream, contains a proprietary ingredient called "Vital Cycle Veil," which uses a plate-shaped powder called bentonite to form a veil-like layer over the skin. This helps suppress static electricity on the skin's surface, reducing the attraction of pollen particles. If you're prone to pollen dermatitis, I recommend checking out Decencia's Ayanas Cream. Decencia has also recently released a new product called the Moist Barrier Mist. Unlike the cream, this mist contains a special polymer agent that, when sprayed on the face, creates a smooth surface so that pollen slides right off rather than adhering to the skin. It's a great option for on-the-go protection throughout the day. For internal support, I'd also like to introduce Miyako Island Bidens pilosa tea. A study published in the academic journal Applied Pharmacology in 2014 found that over 70% of participants taking Bidens pilosa supplements reported an improvement in hay fever symptoms, compared to only about 30% in the placebo group. While it's not a medication and results aren't guaranteed, it's worth considering for those who prefer a more natural approach or have only mild symptoms. It's available as both a tea and a supplement, and my husband uses it regularly. To summarize: pollen counts in 2021 are higher than in 2020 and slightly above the threshold for severe symptoms in some areas, but remain well below the 10-year average. By combining localized treatments such as nasal sprays and eye drops, internal support such as Bidens pilosa tea, and skin protection through sunscreen and pollen-barrier creams or mists, you should be able to effectively prevent and manage your hay fever symptoms this season.
